La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell, 17-7, to Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles drop to 4-4 on the season while the Firebirds improve to 3-2.
Carthage (Wis.) got on the board first as Rachel Harris assisted Jessie Gibson for a goal at 28:28, but UWL's
Nicole Jernander scored seconds later with the feed from
Mackenzie Chvatal to make it a 1-1 game. Jernander gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead at 25:57, but the Firebirds would score the next seven goals to take a 8-2 lead with 5:08 left in the first half.
UWL's
Lauren Schwartz assisted
Britta Nelson for Nelson's first goal of the game with under a minute remaining in the half, but Margaux Giacotto answered back to give Carthage (Wis.) a 9-3 lead heading into halftime.
Mackenzie Chvatal had one assist Saturday.
Carthage (Wis.) had 18 shots with 14 on goal in the first half while UWL finished with eight shots, six on goal.
The Firebirds started the second half going on a three-goal run, but
Anna Davis scored with an assist from
Grace Willmott at 18:45 to make it a 12-4 game. Carthage (Wis.) scored three more times until
Savannah Allen found Jernander open in the eight for her second of the day (8:32).
Valerie Johnson scored on a free-position shot to cut the Eagles deficit to nine with 5:06 remaining. Jernander notched her third goal of the day as she scored at 2:10.
UWL finished with 18 shots in the game with 13 on goal. Jernander led the Eagles with three goals while Nelson collected two.
Megan Brokmeier had a team-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers while
Abigail Steigauf and Schwartz both won two draw controls.
Abi Furlano would take the loss in net recording 12 saves.
Ellen Coggio had two saves for UWL.
Carthage (Wis.) totaled 39 shots in the game, including 31 on goal. Gibson led the Firebirds with five goals while Giacotto and Hanna Holloway each finished with four. Harris and Maddi Berni had two goals each. Harris added a team-high three assists. Giacotto led Carthage (Wis.) with 11 ground balls and seven draw controls. Alessandra Almendarez finished with six saves to earn the victory.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 17 at UW-River Falls at 1 p.m.
