La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team earned a 20-10 victory over Wartburg College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season while the Knights fall to 0-3.
UWL set a single-game school record with its 20 goals. The Eagles, in their second season as a varsity sport, had scored a school record 18 goals in a 18-9 victory over Anderson University (Ind.) on March 8, 2020.
UWL also set single-game records for shots (46) and shots on goal (38) Saturday.
Abigail Steigauf had three goals and one assist.
The Eagles scored the first three goals on Saturday.
Abigail Steigauf would strike first on a free position shot (28:24) as would
Britta Nelson (27:17).
Valerie Johnson scored on a fast break to make it 3-0, but Bri Greiskalns got the Knights on the board at 26:55. Steigauf (26:20) and
Bella Post (24:58) scored the next two goals for UWL to make it 5-1, but Wartburg (Iowa) scored the next three goals to cut the lead to 5-4. Ellie Johnson scored at 16:35 to make it a one-goal game.
Four consecutive goals from Nelson (13:15),
Anna Davis (12:45), Johnson (12:29) and
Lauren Schwartz (12:16) would help give the Eagles a 9-6 lead heading into halftime.
Wartburg (Iowa) had 15 shots in the first half while UWL finished with 19.
The Knights would score the first goal in the second half to make it a 9-7 game but Schwartz would find the back of the net again to extend UWL's lead to three. Greiskalns brought Wartburg (Iowa) within in two at 21:50, UWL would go on a five goal run to make it 13-8.
Annika Zillisch scored her first career goal to give UWL a 10-goal lead (4:24) and
Mackenzie Chvatal would score her third of the day (2:06) to make it 20-9.
Britta Nelson finished with three goals Saturday.
Steigauf, Schwartz, Nelson and Chvatal all recorded hat tricks while Johnson, Davis and
Nicole Jernander finished with two goals each. Johnson won six of the team's 13 draw controls while
Megan Brokmeier would have a team-high four ground balls, including three caused turnovers.
Abi Furlano earned the win in goal, recording five saves.
Ellen Coggio had one save for UWL.
Wartburg (Iowa) totaled 24 shots in the game. Greiskalns had a team-high four goals while Kelsi Tidwell finished with 18 saves.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 20 hosting Carroll University (Wis) at 1 p.m.
