Rally Falls Short; UWL Drops Home Opener

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team dropped its 2021 home opener Wednesday night with a 10-8 loss to Hamline University (Minn.) at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season while the Pipers improve to 1-0. 

Hamline (Minn.) scored the first three goals Wednesday night with Maya Hernandez getting the first goal at 27:59.  Taryn Leonard notched the next two goals for the Pipers to make it 3-1.  UWL responded with three consecutive goals to tie the game as Abigail Steigauf (10:11), Anna Davis (7:06) and Britta Nelson (5:11) all scored.

Maria Lewis (4:20) and Ashley Hessler (3:39) gave Hamline (Minn.) a 5-3 lead before Valerie Johnson scored for UWL at 1:49 to cut the deficit to 5-4. Hessler scored her second goal of the game at :20 to give the Pipers a 6-4 halftime advantage. 

Hamline (Minn.) had 15 shots in the first half while UWL finished with 14. 

The Pipers took an 9-4 lead with Hernandez (25:09), Chloe Herbst (22:59) and Hernandez (17:04) getting on the scoreboard.  Nicole Jernander's goal for UWL with 16:03 remaining in the game cut the lead to 9-5. Hessler recorded her third goal of the game with 11:42 left for a 10-5 lead, but UWL cut the lead to 10-8 with Bella Post (11:07), Steigauf (7:21) and Anna Davis (5:45) scoring.  

UWL, in his second season as a varsity sport. finished with 29 shots, including eight from Johnson.  Steigauf finished with six shots and Davis five.  Steigauf totaled two goals and two assists for the Eagles while Davis had two goals. Abi Furlano recorded seven saves for UWL. 

Hamline (Minn.) totaled 26 shots in the game. Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries finished with eight saves.

UWL returns to action Friday, March 12 hosting Augsburg University (Minn.) at 5 p.m.
