Second Half Rally Falls Short in Loss at UW-Oshkosh

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 55-49 at 20th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon in Kolf Sports Center. The Eagles drop to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. 

Neither team led by more than four points in the first quarter.  UW-Oshkosh took a 20-16 lead with :19 left on Leah Porath's three-point play, but a layup from UWL's Lauryn Milne with :01 remaining cut the lead to 20-18. 

Carly Coulthart's three-pointer for the Eagles tied the game at 23-23 with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter. Kayce Vaile's layup with 5:18 left and Jenna Jorgensen's layup with 3:12 remaining gave UW-Oshkosh a 27-23 advantage. Lexie Higgins converted a layup for UWL with 2:11 left made it a two-point game. After a Ava Douglas free throw with 1:15 remaining gave the Titans a 28-25 lead, Milne's jumper with :58 left cut it to 28-27. Coulthart made a pair of free throws with :01 remaining to give the Eagles a 29-28 halftime lead. 

The teams combined to score 16 points in the third quarter.  UWL took a 35-34 lead with 3:02 left on a Milne free throw before UW-Oshkosh scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 38-35 lead.

The Titans took a 45-39 lead with 4:14 remaining on a Douglas free throw, but Higgins' layup with 3:59 left cut it to 45-41. Leah Porath's three-point play with 3:02 remaining gave UW-Oshkosh a 48-41 advantage. Higgins' layup with 2:14 remaining and a pair of Coulthart free throws with 1:23 remaining cut it to 48-45, but UWL could get no closer the rest of the game. The Titans went seven-of-14 at the free throw line in the final 1:14. 

UWL shot 35.3% from the field, including 30.8% (four-of-13) from three-point range, and 60.0% (nine-of-15) at the free throw line. Coulthart led the Eagles with 15 points while Higgins totaled 13 points and team-high 10 rebounds. Milne finished with 11 points. 

UW-Oshkosh shot 36.0% from the field, including 22.7% (five-of-22) from three-point range, and 53.8% (14-of-26) at the line. Douglas led the Titans with 13 points while Porath and Nikki Arneson each had 12. Julia Silloway, Abby Kaiser and Vaile each finished with seven rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Monday, December 13 at Carleton College (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
