St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team advanced to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships with a 1-0 win over Wartburg College (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at St. Catherine University (Minn.). The Eagles improve to 15-4-2 on the season and will play host St. Catherine (Minn.) in the NCAA III Second Round Sunday, November 14 at 1 p.m. Wartburg (Iowa) finishes its season at 15-4-1.
The first half was scoreless Saturday with UWL totaling seven shots and Wartburg (Iowa) five. The Knights had all three first half corner kicks.
Quinn Shannon had three saves.
UWL scored the game's only goal at 46:43 on
Sophie Amundson's 10th goal of the season with an assist from
Maggie Hernandez. Wartburg (Iowa) was held to two shots in the second half, including its final one from Emily Fontana with less than 9:00 left.
UWL totaled seven shots in the game with six different players recording one on goal. Wartburg (Iowa) finished with five shots as three players recorded one shot each on goal. The Eagles had six corner kicks in the second 45:00 of action while the Knights finished with one in the second half to give them four for the game.
Quinn Shannon earned the shutout for UWL, finishing with three saves. Marissa Lopez finished with four saves for Wartburg (Iowa). The Knights also had one team save.
UWL leads the all-time series with Wartburg (Iowa), 9-4-2. The Eagles earned a 1-0 win over the Knights on September 21 in Waverly, Iowa. The game was scoreless in the first half with each team recording one shot on goal. UWL scored the only goal of the game on a Wartburg (Iowa) own goal at 55:04.
