Balanced Scoring Leads to Win over WashU

Box Score Wauwatosa, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 65-54 win over Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) Friday night in the Wisconsin Lutheran College Paul F. Knueppel Classic.  The Bears dropped their season-opener. 

UWL led by as many as four points in the first quarter before taking a 16-13 lead after the first 10:00.  WashU tied the game at 18-18 with 8:25 remaining in the second quarter on a Molly Gannon three-pointer. A pair of Lauryn Milne free throws gave UWL a 20-18 advantage and Emma Gamoke's three-point field goal made it 23-18 with 7:07 left in the first half. After the Bears cut it to 25-22, the Eagles used a 5-0 run to lead 30-22. Karisa Grandison made a pair of free throws for WashU with 2:37 remaining to make it 30-24, but UWL ended the half on a 7-0 run to lead 37-24. Casandra Warmsley had four points and Carly Coulthart three in the run. 

WashU cut the deficit to 39-31 with 6:46 left in the third quarter, but the Bears could get no closer the rest of the game as UWL took a 50-37 lead after three quarters. The Eagles led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter. 

UWL shot 39.7% from the field Friday, including 33.3% (five-of-15) from three-point range, and 73.7% (14-of-19) at the free throw line. Eleven different players scored for the Eagles with Fitzgerald finishing with a team-high 11 points. Coulthart finished with nine points and team-high eight rebounds while Schumann totaled eight points and Julie Seidel seven. 

WashU shot 32.1% from the field, including 16.0% (four-of-25) from three-point range, and 66.7% (14-of-21) at the line. Maya Arnott led the Bears with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Jessica Brooks finished with 11 points. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 13 versus Martin Luther College (Minn.) at 1 p.m. in the Knueppel Classic.
