Waukesha, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse played its first varsity competition in school history Saturday afternoon, falling 18-1 at Carroll University (Wis.) at Haertel Field. Carroll (Wis.) improves to 2-1 on the season.
Anna Davis scored UWL's first goal in team history with :11 remaining in the second half.
Carroll (Wis.) started the game with a quick pace, scoring itsfirst goal in less than two minutes. The Pioneers found the back of the net two more times in the opening 10 minutes. UWL held Carroll (Wis.) scoreless for nine minutes until Courtenay Carls found the back of the net at 11:38. The Pioneers closed out the half with three goals in the final 11 minutes to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
UWL had five shots in the first half, including three on goal. Carroll (Wis.) finished with 26 shot in the first half with 18 on goal. The Eagles were eight-for-16 on clean attempts while also getting nine ground balls in the first half. Ellen Coggio registered 11 saves for UWL.
The Eagles started the second half with a draw control from Valerie Johnson, but the Pioneers would get the ball back and score at 29:07, going on a seven-goal run in the first 15 minutes. Carroll (Wis.) would continue to control the game until Johnson caused Amanda Ferr to turnover the ball allowing Davis to score her first career goal with :11 remaining. Davis also recorded three ground balls and a draw control.
Mackenzie Chvatal led UWL with four shots with two on goal also adding one caused turnover. Abigail Steigauf, Kaylee Keller and Kloee Brabender led UWL with two caused turnovers each while Steigauf added a draw control to her day. Coggio ended the day with 11 saves and three ground balls playing the full 60 minutes.
Carroll's (Wis.) Clara Jelacic led with 11 ground balls also adding three goals and seven draw controls. Alicia Van Dale earned the win for the Pioneers with four saves.
UWL returns to action Friday, March 6 at Hanover College (Ind.) at 4 p.m.
