First Quarter Run Leads to Win over UW-Stevens Point

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team used a strong finish to the first quarter in earning a 79-50 victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, receiving votes on D3hoops.com, improve to 17-6 overall and 8-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the conference. 

Playing on Senior Day while honoring Dani Craig and Delaney Schoenenberger, UWL took a 14-3 lead after the first quarter. UW-Stevens Point's Amber Baehman hit the team's first jumper of the game to make it 2-0, but the Pointers missed 18 straight shots from the field in the opening quarter. The game was tied, 3-3, when UWL scored the final 11 points of the period to take a 14-3 lead. Kat Fitzgerald connected on a three-pointer with 5:02 left to make it 6-3 and the Eagles would never trail the rest of the game.

The teams combined to shoot 12.8% (five-of-39) from the field in the first quarter with UWL finishing four-of-20 (20.0%) and UW-Stevens Point one-of-19 (5.3%). 

UWL led, 19-6 with 7:57 left in the second quarter, when UW-Stevens Point went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 19-13. The Eagles led, 40-29, at halftime. 

Schoenenberger scored seven straight points to give UWL a 51-33 advantage with 5:53 left in the third quarter. Taylor Greenheck's three-point play for UW-Stevens Point with 1:35 remaining cut the lead to 53-42, but Schoenenberger connected on a jumper with :38 left to give UWL a 55-42 lead after three quarters.

The Eagles opened the fourth quarter on a 20-3 run to lead 75-45 with 3:38 remaining.

Ava Kramer finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

UWL shot 43.3% from the field, including 37.5% (nine-of-24) from three-point range, and 75.0% (18-of-24) at the line Saturday. Craig led the Eagles with 18 points while finishing with four rebounds and three assists. Emma Gamoke scored 12 points off the bench while Ava Kramer and Schoenenberger each added 11 points. Schoenenberger had a game-high nine rebounds while Kramer had six rebounds and three assists. 

UW-Stevens Point shot 28.8% from the field, including 20.8% (five-of-24) from three-point range, and 77.8% (seven-of-nine) at the line. Greenheck led the Pointers with 11 points while Bailee Collins finished with 10 points and team-high eight rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 19 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
