Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team, ranked 20th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, fell at sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater, 73-47, Wednesday night. The Eagles drop to 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks improve to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The game started the second half of league play.
UW-Whitewater never trailed in the game, leading by as many as six points in the first quarter before taking an 18-14 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The Warhawks opened the second quarter on a 16-3 run to lead 34-17 with 2:47 remaining after Rebekah Schumacher's three-pointer. UWL cut the deficit to 34-22 with :27 left in the first half on a Lexie Higgins free throw, but Veronica Kieres' layup with :09 remaining gave UW-Whitewater a 36-22 halftime advantage.
The Warhawks led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, including 50-30, with 4:12 left. The Eagles cut it to 52-39 with 2:30 remaining on Delaney Schoenenberger's two free throws before UW-Whitewater took a 57-41 lead after the third quarter. The Warhawks led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles, 16-6.
UWL shot 29.3% from the field, including 20.0% (three-of-15) from three-point range, and 55.6% (10-of-18) at the line. Higgins led the Eagles with eight points and eight rebounds. Schoenenberger finished with seven points while Kyah Steiner and Alana Gilles each had six.
UW-Whitewater shot 45.9% from the field, including 31.3% (five-of-16) from three-point range, and 85.7% (12-of-14) at the line. Kieres led four Warhawks in double figures with 16 points. Schumacher finished with 14 points while Aleah Grundahl and Courtney Oomens each totaled 11. Johanna Taylor finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 5 hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
