Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team, ranked ninth on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, fell to UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC matchup 58-67, Saturday afternoon in Berg Gym. The Eagles drop to 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC.
The Eagles started the first quarter going on a 12-9 run. Lexie Higgins jumper at 7:59 would start the scoring for UWL, but the Pointers would answer back at 6:20 with a layup from Kellan Schmidt. However, UWL would hold Stevens Point scoreless for three minutes, while they took a 8-4 lead with 4:22 to go.
Heading into the second quarter UW-Stevens Point would go on a 14-3 run to take a 23-15 lead with 4:20 left in the first half. The Eagles would fight back after Ava Kramer made a three-pointer at the buzzer to bring UWL within eight before halftime.
Delaney Schoenenberger would start the scoring for a third quarter comeback at 7:31, and a minute later Kramer would assist Higgins for another two points. Those two would work together again to bring the Eagles within four with 5:10 left in the third quarter. UWL would only trail by three heading into the fourth quarter after Kramer would score on back-to-back free-throws at 2:34.
Throughout the fourth quarter UWL would rally to earn the lead again, the Eagles would trail 53-47 with 5:18 to go after Emma Gamoke would score a three-pointer. With 1:06 left Schoenenberger would assist Higgins on a layup cutting the Eagles deficit to nine. UWL would continue to stop the Pointers lead after Schoenenberger would score three with just :43 remaining. However, Stevens Point would pull away and secure their win after outscoring the Eagles 4-3 in the final seconds.
UWL shot 34.4% from the field, including 20.8% (four-of-24) from three-point range and 75.0% (nine-of-12) from the line. Higgins would lead with 13 points, finishing with five rebounds while Schoenenberger ended the day with 10 points. Gamoke had a team high six rebounds.
UW-Stevens Point shot 52.5% from the field, including 33.3% (three-of-nine) from three-point range, and 84.6% (22-of-26) at the line. Greenheck led the Pointers with 19 points also adding six rebounds while Schmidt finished with 13 points. Bailee Collins would have a game high eight rebounds.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 18 hosting University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
