UWL Drops Conference Game Against UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team, ranked 18th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, fell to sixth ranked UW-Whitewater in a WIAC matchup 52-66, Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 11-4 on the season and 2-2 in the WIAC while the Warhawks improve to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC.

The Eagles started the first quarter going on a 4-0 run. 12-9 run. Dani Craig's jumper  at 9:40 would start the scoring for UWL, but the Warhawks would answer back at 8:59 with a fast break layup in the pain from Rebekah Shumacher. The first quarter would be a battle for the lead as the two teams tied three times. UW-Whitewater would go on a 8-4 run to end the first quarter in the lead, 17-13. UWL would continue to trail heading into the second quarter, trailing by 16 with just :40 left in the first half.

UWL would begin to cut the Warhawks lead down in the beginning of the second half, at 9:22  in the third quarter Kyah Steiner would score three. With :45 remaining Ava Kramer would make a steal from the Warhakws, then run it down the court for a fast break layup in the paint to bring the Eagles within eight. 

Throughout the fourth quarter the Eagles continued to try and cut their deficit, Schoenenberger would score at 8:22 cutting the Warhawks lead to 10. Later, Schoenenberger would score a three-pointer with 3:35 remaining, UWL only trailing by eight. The Warhawks would continue to control the fourth quarter outscoring the Eagles 9-3 in the final minutes. 

UWL shot 29.0% from the field, including 24.0% six-of-25) from three-point range and 75.0% (six-of-eight) from the line. Craig would lead the Eagles with 18 points, while Schoenenberger led with nine rebounds also adding 12 points. Kramer would end the night with six rebounds and two assists. 

UW-Whitewater shot 41.0% from the field, including 21.4% (three-of-14) from three-point range and 81.3% (13-16) from the line. Becky Raeder and Johanna Taylor both led the Warhawks with 14 points, while Taylor had a game high 10 rebounds.  

UWL returns to action Saturday, January 18 at University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 3 p.m.
