UWL Eliminated at NWCA Duals; Zamin and Hertel Undefeated

NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals Website

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked ninth in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, went 1-2 on Friday at the U.S. Marine Corps/National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals at the Freedom Hall & Exhibition Hall in the Kentucky Expo Center.  The duals are presented by ARMS Software & Defense Soap, hosted by NUWAY.

UWL, now 5-4 on the season, opened the tournament with a 31-21 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) Friday before a 24-16 loss to eighth-ranked Johnson & Wales University (R.I.). The Eagles then fell 19-18 to Luther College (Iowa) in the consolation second round. The teams finished in an 18-18 tie, but Luther (Iowa) earned one team point by earning the tiebreaker with one win by fall.

The NCAA Division III field features 24 programs, including defending champion Augsburg University (Minn.). The Auggies, ranked first this season, have won seven team titles at the NWCA National Duals. Wartburg College (Iowa), currently ranked second in the country, has won 11 national duals crowns.  Augsburg (Minn.) and Wartburg (Iowa) are only teams to win the Division III National Duals with Wartburg (Iowa) appearing in the finals 17 of 18 seasons.  UW-La Crosse (2008, 2011), Elmhurst College, Ill. (2013), Concordia College-Moorhead, Minn. (2014), UW-Whitewater (2015), Wabash College, Ind. (2016) and Johnson & Wales, R.I. (2019) are the only other schools to reach the Division III final.

Of the 24 programs competing in this year's Division III national duals, 15 are ranked in the top-25, including all of the top-10.  Along with Augsburg (Minn.) and Wartburg (Iowa) in the top-two, Wabash College (Ind.) is ranked third, Loras College (Iowa) fourth and the University of Mount Union (Ohio) fifth. Coe College (Iowa) is ranked sixth followed by Baldwin-Wallace University (Ohio), Johnson & Wales (R.I.), UW-La Crosse and North Central College (Ill.) to round-out the top-10.  Ithaca College (N.Y.) is ranked 13th with New York University 14th, Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) 15th, UW-Whitewater 19th and Millikin University (Ill.) 22nd.
