UWL Drops Five-Set Match to Nationally-Ranked UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 18-25, 15-11) to 13th-ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference. 

The opening set was tied 10 times with six lead changes. UWL forced a 20-20 tie on Emma Lawrence's kill. She added a pair of kills later for a 22-21 lead, but Ashton Doll recorded a kill for UW-Whitewater to tie it 22-22.  A pair of attack errors by the Eagles gave the Warhawks a two-point lead and Chloe Bueschler gave UW-Whitewater the victory in the first set with a kill. 

UWL led by as many five points in the second set at 9-4 after a pair of Lawrence kills. The Eagles later led 13-9, but the Warhawks went on a 11-2 run to lead 20-15 on a Emma Aske kill. UWL could get no closer than four points the rest of the set.

The Eagles raced out to a 7-2 lead in the third set and later led 11-5. The Warhawks cut the deficit to 12-11, but the Eagles scored seven of the next nine points to lead 19-13 and later scored five of the last six points in the set. 

Laine Hoeffel's kill for UWL tied the fourth set, 13-13. An attack error by UW-Whitewater gave UWL a 14-13 advantage as the Eagles scored 12 of the 17 points. 

UW-Whitewater never trailed in the fifth and deciding set, scoring three of the first four points. UWL cut the margin to 6-4 on a Anna Rossner kill and later trailed, 12-10, but UW-Whitewater secure the win with three of the last four points.

Lawrence, the WIAC Kwik Trip Offensive Player of the Week, finished with a match-high 27 kills Wednesday night. She hit .284 (27-8-67) overall while also having a team-high 19 digs. Hoeffel finished with 12 kills while Rossner and Brianne Korducki each had eight. Abbey Fox had 49 assists as the Eagles hit .282 (66-18-170). 

Courtney Conway finished with 13 digs and Fox 10. UWL had 4.0 team blocks. 

Buescher led UW-Whitewater with 20 kills while hitting .378 (20-3-45). Aske finished with 10 kills with Doll, Rachel Butterfield and Morgan Wardall each recording nine. Maggie Streckert and Kellyann Sotoris each recorded 21 assists as the Warhawks hit .253 (64-19-178). 

Morgan Jensen led three players in double figures in digs wiht 15 while Hailey Mackenthun finished with 11 and Aske with 10. UW-Whitewater had 6.0 team blocks.

UWL returns to action Saturday, September 28 hosting Luther College (Iowa) at 1 p.m.
