UWL Defeats UW-Whitewater; Forces Second Title Game

James Witt earned the complete-game victory Saturday.
Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 10-2 victory over UW-Whitewater in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday afternoon at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The win forces a second championship game to be played Saturday night. 

UWL improves to 28-14 while UW-Whitewater falls to 33-10. The Warhawks are ranked 14th in this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll while the Eagles are receiving votes.

The Eagles scored five times in the top of the third. Brady Stolzman's single scored Nate Heili while Brennan Schmitt scored on the play on a Warhawks' throwing error to make it 2-0. Carson Youngquist followed with an RBI single to knock in Stolzman for a 3-0 lead. Mitch Sutton and Shane Coker added run-scoring singles for a 5-0 advantage.

UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third after Connor Schneider scored on a wild pitch and Nick Santoro came in on Cal Aldridge's RBI single. The Warhawks had the bases-loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mike Aiello flied out to left field to end the inning.

UWL scored five runs in the ninth. Tommy Nelsen walked with the bases-loaded for a 6-2 lead and Jake McClellan followed with a three-run double to make it 9-2. Zach Carney scored the final run on a fielding error.

James Witt (3-0) earned the complete-game victory for UWL. He went 9.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, two runs and three walks while striking out three. The Eagles finished with 13 hits as Stolzman and Alex Robson each went 3-for-4. Youngquist went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Eight starters had a hit for UWL. 

Matt O'Sullivan (7-4) took the loss for UW-Whitewater, going 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs and two walks while striking out two. The Warhawks had 11 hits as Santoro, Nick Schraeder, Noah Jensen and Schneider each had two.
