UWL Earns Walk-Off Win over UW-Platteville in WIAC Championship

Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 2-1 walk-off win in 12 innings over UW-Platteville Friday afternoon in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Eagles improve to 26-13 on the season and advance to face the winner of UW-Stout versus UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. Friday.

UW-Platteville falls to 19-20 on the year and will play at 4 p.m. Friday against the loser of UW-Stout/UW-Whitewater in an elimination game. The 12 inning game is the second-longest in WIAC Championship history. UW-Stevens Point earned a 1-0 win in 13 innings over UWL in 1999.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams in the WIAC Championship, UWL's Shane Coker doubled with one out in the bottom of the 12th. He advanced to third on Jake McClellan's single and scored the winning run on a UW-Platteville fielding error.  

Extra innings saw both teams leaving runners on base. UW-Platteville had a runner at second with one out in the top of the 10th when UWL's Caleb Willems struck out the last two batters of the inning. UWL left runners at second and third in the bottom of the 10th and had the potential game-winning run thrown out at home in the bottom of the 11th. The Pioneers also left a runner on base in the top of the 12th.

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Coker doubled to start the inning and moved to third on McClellan's sacrifice bunt. Zach Carney's groundout scored Coker with the game's first run.

UW-Platteville tied the game in the top of the sixth. Mitchell Susa tripled to lead-off the inning and scored on Brennan Kearney's one-out groundout.

Willems (4-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings in relief. He allowed two hits while striking out five. He tied the school record for appearances (54) with Cory Anderson (1995-98).

Mason McMahon started for the Eagles, going 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run and four walks with eight strikeouts. UWL totaled 12 hits with Coker finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles and scored both runs for the Eagles. Carson Youngquist went 2-for-3. 

Scott Gordon (1-3) took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run (unearned) while striking out three. Keegan Madigan started for the Pioneers, going 9.1 innings, allowing eight hits, one run and one walk with four strikeouts. UW-Platteville had eight hits with Susa, Ross Krist, Jonathan Kelso and Josh Moses (the top-four in the line-up) each with two.

UWL, making its 17th appearance in the 21 years of the WIAC Championship, has won three tournament titles (2000, 2012, 2016).
