La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse extended its win streak to seven games as it defeated the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh by scores of 9-6 and 8-1 Monday afternoon at Copeland Park. UWL improves to 14-8 overall and 10-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play while UW-Oshkosh falls to 13-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference. The Eagles remain in second-place in the WIAC behind UW-Whitewater (9-1).
In the opener Monday, Nate Radde led off the game with a solo home run to give the Titans the early 1-0 lead. UWL would put two runners on in the bottom of the first with one out, but was unable to score either of them. With the score still 1-0 in the third, UWL got on the scoreboard as it scored two runs on two hits.
Nate Heili singled, advanced to second with his 10th stolen base of the season, and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Cal Tully then walked with one out. Heili scored and Tully moved up to second base on
Mitch Sutton's ground out to tie the game.
Brennan Schmitt hit his eighth double of the season to score Tully and put the Eagles up 2-1.
Jack Mizgalski allowed five runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings to earn the win in the opener.
UWL would extend its lead to 7-1 in the fourth as Sutton came up with the big hit as he hit a three-run home run for his second home run of the season.
Alex Robson and Heili also both drove in a run with a double and a ground out, respectively. UW-Oshkosh would get two runs back in the fifth as Matt McNabb drove in both runs with a double to make the score 7-3.
With one out in the sixth inning, the Titans would get three straight hits (two singles and a double) to score a run and then one out later scored another run on a single by Eric Modaff to make the score 7-5. In the Eagles' half of the sixth,
Zach Carney led off by getting hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a single by Heili. Both runners would then move up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Tully. Sutton then drove in his fifth run of the game on a single up the middle to put the Eagles up 8-5.
Hunter Staniske led-off the top of the eighth with a solo home run to pull the Titans to within 8-6. Carney hit a triple with no outs in the eighth and scored on a Titans' error to put the Eagles up 9-6. After hitting a Titans' batter with one out in the ninth,
Caleb Willems got Radde to ground into a game ending double play to pick up his third save of the season for the Eagles.
Jack Mizgalski (1-1) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out five to earn the win on the mound. Willems came on in relief for the Eagles giving up one run on two hits and striking out one in 3.0 innings of work to earn the save. Colan Treml 4-4) suffered the loss for the Titans as he allowed nine runs on 11 hits and three strike outs in 7.1 innings of work.
Eight starters had at least one hit for the Eagles including Heili, Sutton and Carney each finishing with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, UWL scored right away in the first inning and never trailed in the contest. Carney led-off the first with a single and advanced to second when Heili walked.
Carson Youngquist then singled to score Carney while Heili advanced to third. Heili and Youngquist would be stranded as the Titans got
Jake McClellan to ground into an inning ending double play. UW-Oshkosh got the run back in the third inning as they scored a run on one hit.
UWL would break the game wide open in the sixth inning as it scored six runs on five hits, one error and one walk. All six runs were scored after the first two hitters were retired. Carney (run scoring triple), Heili (run scoring single) and Schmitt (two-run double) provided the big hits to spark the offensive explosion for the Eagles. UWL would add a run in the eighth inning on a RBI single by McClellan.
Zach Pronschinske (2-1) pitched his first career complete-game in an Eagles uniform as he allowed one run on four hits while striking out three in 9.0 innings. The complete-game was just the second of the season for UWL as
Connor Cook pitched a complete-game against UW-Stevens Point on March 30. Chris Atwood (3-4) suffered the loss on the mound for the Titans as he gave up five runs on 11 hits and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
Tommy Nelsen (3-for-4, run scored, RBI), Carney (2-for-5, two runs and an RBI), and Heili (2-for-4, walk, run, RBI) led the Eagles' offense in game two. Also finishing with multiple hits for UWL were
Alex Robson (2-for-5) and Tully (2-for-3).
UWL will return to action on Tuesday, April 16 facing UW-Stout at Copeland Park. The doubleheader, originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, was moved to La Crosse due to field conditions. UW-Stout will be the home team with game one starting at 1 p.m.
