La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Stout Tuesday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Blue Devils won the opener, 7-3, before the Eagles came back to take the nightcap, 9-0, behind a combined shutout from
James Witt and
Will Monroe.
UWL is now 15-9 overall and 11-3 in the WIAC while UW-Stout is 11-10 overall and 6-8 in the conference. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Menomonie, but were moved to La Crosse due to the weather. UW-Stout was the home team in both games Tuesday.
UW-Stout jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opener on a two-run home run from Kasey Bass. The Blue Devils added three runs in the second on Reid Akerman's RBI single and Bass' two-run single.
UWL cut the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth on
Brennan Schmitt's triple knocking in
Mitch Sutton. UW-Stout increased its lead to 7-1 in the fifth on Caleb Hurt's run-scoring double and Ben Vanhove's bases-loaded walk. The Eagles got RBI singles from
Nate Heili and
Brady Stolzman in the top of the eighth to make it 7-3, but left a pair of runners on base to end the inning. UWL got the first two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but failed to score.
Ty Strzelczyk (1-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and one walk with one strikeout.
Bryce Wesling went 3.0 innings for the Eagles, allowing one hit, two runs and four walks while striking out two.
Rob Zolecki pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. UWL had nine hits in the opener with Heili finishing 2-for-4.
Casey Ryan (1-0) earned the win for UW-Stout in the opener, going 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five. The Blue Devils also finished with nine hits as Bass went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI.
Witt and Monroe combined on the shutout in the nightcap, limiting UW-Stout to six hits. Witt (1-0) earned the win, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing six hits and two walks with six strikeouts while Monroe went 1.0 inning, allowing two walks while striking out two.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Zach Carney scored on Schmitt's RBI double. UWL added three runs on four hits in the third with
Tommy Nelsen starting the inning with a home run.
Carson Youngquist had an RBI groundout and Stolzman and RBI single. Schmitt hit a solo home run in the fifth to give UWL a 5-0 lead while Carney had an RBI double and Heili a two-run double in the sixth to make it 8-0. Stolzman scored on
Cal Tully's groundout in the seventh to finish the scoring.
UWL finished with 13 hits as Carney, Stolzman and Nelsen each had three.
Jack Donahue (2-3) took the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 5.1 innings, allowign 12 hits, eight runs and one walk with one strikeout. Jordan Wilson had two of the Blue Devils' six hits.
UWL returns to action Thursday, April 18 at top-ranked Concordia College Chicago (Ill.) with a doubleheader starting at noon. The Cougars are ranked first on the ABCA Top-25 Poll and D3baseball.com.
