Women's Track & Field Finishes Second at WIAC Indoor Championships

WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (Presented by Culver's)

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track and field team finished in second-place at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (Presented by Culver's) Saturday night hosted at UW-Whitewater's Kachel Fieldhouse. The Eagles placed second with 162.50 team points. UW-Eau Claire won the title with 172.50 points while UW-Stevens Points third with 109.00. 

UW-Oshkosh was fourth (77.00) followed by UW-Stout (54.50), UW-Platteville (45.00), UW-Whitewater (30.50) and UW-River Falls (10.00).

UWL won three individual and one relay title on Saturday. The Eagles' Savannah Rygiewicz captured the 60 (7.65) and 200 (25.42) meter dashes while Betsy Schreier took the triple jump (39-4). Mara Schroeder, Lucy Fashingbauer, Sydney Emmerich and Rygiewicz took the 4x400-meter relay (3:58.46).

Rygiewicz joins Meg Heafy (2016) in school history to win the 60 and 200-meter dash at the same league championships. UWL's Angela Klatt won the 55-meter and 200-meter dash in 2003 and 2004. Rygiewicz also set a school record with her winning time of 7.65 in the 60-meter dash, breaking the mark of 7.66 by Jaime Ludwigson set in 2014.

Schreier is the first UWL athlete to win the WIAC triple jump since Bria Halama in 2014.

UWL won the 4x400-meter relay for the first time since 2014 when Jenna Halverson, Halama, Shannon Klein and Claire Elliott won the title. 

The Eagles' Amanda Wiebke finished third (3,480 points), Ariel Malvitz fifth (3,182) and Kemmesha Thomas seventh (3,118) in the pentathlon on Saturday afternoon. Wiebke set a school record with her 3,480 points, breaking the mark of 3,443 points set by Erin McCauley in 2015.

Other top finishers on the track included four UWL runners in the top-eight in the 60-meter hurdles. Hannah Zenkovich was second (9.06) while Isabelle Kick finished fifth (9.27), Rebecca Breyer seventh (9.30) and Erin Zajc eighth (9.54). Kelly Aldrich was eighth (8.06) in the 60-meter dash while Katie Banie finished sixth (2:19.70), Claire Koenecke seventh (2:19.78) and Libby Brugger eighth (2:20.25) in the 800-meter run. 

In Saturday's field events, Tess Miller was third (38-0 1/4) and Addie Hubbard fourth (36-6 1/4) in the triple jump while Brianna Schyvinck placed third (54-8 1/4), Kara Gilmeister fourth (52-7 1/4), Mackenzie Boelke fifth (51-7) and Skye Digman seventh (51-4 1/4) in the weight throw. 

Annie Brekken was named to the 2019 All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team.  The WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team is chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It includes one member from each school.   

UWL returns to action Friday, March 1 at the UW-Platteville Final Qualifier and the Wartburg College (Iowa) Qualifier.
