Zastrow Wins Vault; UWL Wins Relay at WIAC Championships

WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (Presented by Culver's)

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track and field team is in second-place after the first day of action at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (Presented by Culver's) hosted at UW-Whitewater's Kachel Fieldhouse. The Eagles, striving for their seventh straight title, are second with 60.5 team points. UW-Eau Claire leads with 85.5 while UW-Oshkosh is third with 47.0. 

UW-Stevens Point is fourth (36.0) followed by UW-Stout (27.5), UW-Platteville (27.0), UW-Whitewater (19.5) and UW-River Falls (8.0).

UWL won a pair of titles Friday with Rachel Zastrow taking the pole vault (12-2) while Claire Koenecke, Sophie Klein, Sydney Currie and Whitney Ebert won the distance medley relay (12:28.56). 

It marks the second straight year has won the pole vault championship after Sophia Schuessler took the title in 2018. UWL earned its fourth win the last five seasons with the victory in the distance medley relay. The Eagles won the event from 2015-17.

Along with Zastrow winning the vault, Kaitlyn Ganrude was second (11-8) and Hannah Posick tied for eighth (11-2 1/4). Other top finishes in the field events included Skye Digman second (46-10) and Brianna Schyvinck fifth (43-5 1/4) in the shot put while Lizzy Subbert was fourth (5-3 3/4) in the high jump.

The Eagles' Kemmesha Thomas was sixth (17-9 3/4) and Jessica Stelzner eighth (17-7 1/2) in the long jump. 

On the track, Mara Schroeder was second (58.02) and Emma Platzbecker sixth (59.22) in the 400-meter dash with Kaylan Marshall second (18;22.18) in the 5,000-meter run.

In preliminary track action, Isabelle Kick (9.05), Rebecca Breyer (9.17), Hannah Zenkovich (9.14) and Erin Zajc (9.31) advanced to Saturday's 60-meter hurdles final while Savannah Rygiewicz (facility record 7.70) and Kelly Aldrich (7.94) advanced in the 60-meter dash. Rygiewicz broke the facility record of 7.72.
