UWL Rally Falls Short at UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team fell 2-1 at UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon. The Eagles drop to 11-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blugolds improve to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The loss snaps UWL's unbeaten streak at eight (7-0-1). 

It is UWL's first conference loss since a 2-0 home defeat to UW-Whitewater on October 22, 2016. The Eagles were 15-0-1 in their last 16 league matches. 

UW-Eau Claire took a 1-0 lead at 11:24 on Hannah Schaetzel's unassisted goal. It was her third goal of the year. The Blugolds led, 1-0, at halftime despite being outshot by the Eagles, 10-6. 

Maddie Ames gave UW-Eau Claire a 2-0 lead at 50:23 with an unassisted goal. It was her second goal of the season. UWL cut the lead to 2-1 at 52:38 on Sophie Amundson's team-leading 10th goal of the year. It was unassisted. The Eagles had six shots in the final 18:00 of the game, but failed to score. 

UWL had 19 shots overall with nine on goal. Maddy Fennessy and Kaitlyn Villars each had three shots with Fennessy recording all three on goal while Villars had one shot on goal. Amundson finished with two shots (both on goal) while Camryn Hart and Natalie Schisel each had two shots with one on goal.  Cassidy Rothwell finished with two shots. 

The Eagles had 11 corner kicks while the Blugolds totaled six.

UW-Eau Claire totaled 13 shots with 10 on goal. Courtney Slowinski had three shots (all on goal). 

Quinn Shannon recorded eight saves for UWL while Anna Sveiven finished with eight for UW-Eau Claire. 

UWL wraps up its regular season Saturday, November 2 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 2 p.m.
