UWL Wins Two Matches at NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked 10th in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, went 2-1 on the first day of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals Friday at the Freedom Hall & Exhibition Hall in the Kentucky Expo Center.  The duals are presented by the United States Marine Corps and Defense Soap.

UWL, now 6-2 on the season, opened the tournament with a 47-0 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) Friday before a 30-11 win over ninth-ranked York College of Pennsylvania. The Eagles then fell, 29-6, to top-ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) in the quarterfinals.

UWL will face 21st-ranked Millikin University (Ill.) on Saturday, January 5 at 8 a.m. (Central) in the consolation bracket. 

The Eagles went 19-11 in their 30 matches Friday. UWL's Sawyer Massie (174-pounds) and Konrad Ernst (285) each finished 3-0.

Finishing at least fifth in six of its last eight NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals appearances, UWL placed second in 2011 and third in 2012.  The Eagles finished fifth in 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

Three Eagles are currently ranked in the NWCA with Massie (174) third, Ernst (285) fourth and Grant Zamin (157) ninth.

The NCAA Division III field features 24 programs, including defending champion Augsburg (Minn.). The Auggies, ranked first this season, have won six team titles at the NWCA National Duals. Wartburg College (Iowa), currently ranked second in the country, has won 11 national duals crowns.  Augsburg (Minn.) and Wartburg (Iowa) are only teams to win the Division III National Duals with Wartburg (Iowa) appearing in the finals all 17 seasons.  UW-La Crosse (2008, 2011), Elmhurst College, Ill. (2013), Concordia College-Moorhead, Minn. (2014), UW-Whitewater (2015) and Wabash College, Ind. (2016) are the only other schools to reach the Division III final. 

Of the 24 programs competing in this year's Division III national duals, 15 are ranked in the top-25, including nine of the top-10.  Along with Augsburg (Minn.) and Wartburg (Iowa) in the top-two, Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) is ranked third, Ithaca College (N.Y.) fourth, Wabash (Ind.) fifth and University of Mount Union (Ohio) sixth.  Baldwin-Wallace University (Ohio) is ranked eighth with York (Pa.) ninth and UWL 10th. Coe College (Iowa) is 11th, Roger Williams University (R.I.) 13th, UW-Whitewater 16th, Olivet College (Mich.) 17th, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Mass.) 20th and Millikin (Ill.) 21st.
