#9 UW-La Crosse 34, #22 UW-Stevens Point 9
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team completed an undefeated Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schedule with a 34-9 victory over UW-Stevens Point Thursday night in Mitchell Hall Fieldhouse. The Eagles, ranked ninth in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-25 Poll, improve to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC. The Pointers, ranked 22nd, drop to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC.
It marks UWL's first undefeated conference season since 2016-17. It is the Eagles' 11th undefeated season in league play since 2000-01. UWL is now 61-7 in WIAC duals since the 2006-07 season.
UWL now the leads the all-time series, 42-26, with UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles have won the last 17 meetings with the Pointers.
UWL took a 6-0 lead after
Tristan Jenny won by forfeit at 125-pounds. In a dual featuring a pair of top-eight wrestlers at 133-pounds. UW-Stevens Point's Ben Vosters won by decision (8-3) over UWL's
Josh Stenger. Vosters, now 21-2 on the season, is ranked eighth in NCAA Division III while Stenger is sixth. The win cut UW-Stevens Point's deficit to 6-3.
Hayden Schlough (141) and
Logan Schlough (149) recorded back-to-back wins by major decision to give UWL a 14-3 lead.
Hayden Schlough defeated Matt Berlin by the score of 13-2 while
Logan Schlough defeated Alex Heiden by the score of 11-3.
The Eagles'
Grant Zamin, ranked eighth at 157-pounds, won by decision (9-3) over Luke Smiley to make it 17-3. Zamin improved to 20-4 on the season with the victory. UWL recorded a pair of wins by fall to lead, 29-3.
Nick Fetzner defeated Ben Kasten by fall (4:28) at 165-pounds while
Sawyer Massie won by fall (5:29) over Taran Holland at 174-pounds. Massie, now 13-1, is ranked third in the country.
UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 29-9 after Austin Stebane won by decision (6-5) over
Donald Frost at 184-pounds and Jerry Lipke won by decision (5-3 in overtime) over
Cullen Bauer-Trottier at 197. UWL's
Konrad Ernst, ranked fourth at 285-pounds, won by technical fall (15-0, 1:52) over Steve Anderson to finish the dual. Ernst improves to 18-0 on the year.
UWL returns to action Saturday, February 2 at the UW-Eau Claire Don Parker Open at 10 a.m.
