Volleyball Team Earns Conference Win over UW-River Falls

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-21) victory over the UW-River Falls Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles improve to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play while UW-River Falls falls to 10-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Marisa Johnson led all players with 17 kills for UWL and added 15 digs. She hit .265 (17-4-49). Emma Lawrence finished with 16 kills while hitting .378 (16-2-37) with Rhiana Pochman having 12 kills.  Abbey Fox recorded 21 assists and Emily Jenewein with 18 as the Eagles hit .202 (59-24-173).  

Julia Van Fleet led four UWL players with 18 digs while Sophie Quelle recorded 17, Johnson 15 and Fox 12. 

The Eagles had 6.0 team blocks.

Karli Nielsen led UW-River Falls with 11 kills with Dakotah Piotra recording 10.  Nielsen hit .625 (11-1-16) overall.  Hailey Huseth finished with 18 assists and Mallory Griffin 13 as the Falcons hit .120 (38-20-150). 

Piotra and Hannah Robb each had 21 digs for UW-River Falls while Hannah Striggow recorded 11 and Huseth 10.  The Falcons had 8.0 team blocks.

UWL fell behind 10-6 in the first set, but brought it back to a tie at 12 off after a Lawrence kill.  The teams would tie nine more times in the set before a Kathryn Maas kill sealed the game at 27-25 for the Eagles. In the second set, UWL led by as much as seven, but the Falcons would come back and take the set 25-20 on an Robb ace.

A 10-0 run in the third set gave UWL a 19-10 lead and the Eagles would win the third set, 25-14, behind four kills from Lawrence.  UW-River Falls scored the first two points in the fourth set, but UWL would score seven straight and would not trial the rest of the set in winning, 25-21.

UWL returns to action on Saturday, September 29 at UW-Stout at 3 p.m.
