Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-19, 25-17) at UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles drop to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils improve to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
UW-Stout led 13-9 in the opening set after a Kennedy Strain kill, but UWL came back to force a 17-17 tie on
Emma Lawrence's kill. The first set was tied, 19-19, when the Blue Devils scored the next three points and six of the seven to earn the victory.
UWL trailed 5-4 in the second set when it scored six of the next eight points to lead 10-7 after a pair of UW-Stout hitting errors. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 12-10, but could get no closer as the Eagles took seven straight points to lead 19-10.
The Blue Devils never trailed in the third set, racing out to an 13-5 lead as the Eagles could get no closer than six points the rest of the set.
UW-Stout took an 9-3 lead in the fourth set before UWL came back to cut it to 13-8 on a
Marisa Johnson kill. The Eagles trailed 19-15 after a Blue Devils' hitting error, but could get no closer.
Johnson led UWL with 11 kills while Lawrence finished with nine and
Rhiana Pochman eight.
Abbey Fox recorded 26 assists as the Eagles hit .085 (36-21-177) overall.
Julia Van Fleet led four players in double figures in digs with 23 with Johnson finishing with 22, Fox with 19 and
Sophie Quelle with 14. UWL had 9.0 team blocks with
Liz Lansink finishing with two block solos and three block assists and Pochman recording four blocks assists.
Kara Simonson led UW-Stout with 17 kills. Jessica DuVal had 35 assists as the Blue Devils hit .096 (47-30-178). Steph Cannon had 41 digs.
UWL returns to action Friday, October 5 at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The Eagles face Wheaton College (Ill.) at 3 p.m. and Luther College (Iowa) at 5 p.m.
