Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team completed action at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 (19-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-6) victory over Wheaton College (Ill.). The Eagles dropped a pair of matches Friday, falling 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23) to Elmhurst College (Ill.) and 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-18) to Coe College (Iowa). UWL is now 9-6 on the season.
The Eagles rallied from two sets down to win Saturday's match with the Thunder. UWL was tied 12-12 in the third set when it scored three straight points to lead 15-12. The Eagles would never trail again in the set. The fourth set was tied 7-7 when UWL scored six straight points to lead 13-7. Wheaton (Ill.) cut the deficit to 16-14, but UWL scored nine of the final 11 points to secure the set victory. The Eagles never trailed in the fifth and deciding set, scoring the first five points.
Emma Lawrence led UWL with 17 kills while
Kathryn Maas finished with 10.
Emily Jenewein recorded 39 assists as the Eagles hit .143 (49-24-175). The team hit .256 (15-4-43) in the fourth set and .462 (7-1-13) in the fifth.
Julia Van Fleet led five players in double figures in digs with 23 versus Wheaton (Ill.).
Courtney Conway and
Sophie Quelle each had 18 digs while Lawrence and Jenewein each recorded 12. UWL had 7.0 total team blocks as
Liz Lansink recorded one block solo and five block assists.
Versus Elmhurst (Ill.), Lawrence led UWL with 16 kills while
Rhiana Pochman finished with 10. Jenewein had 37 assists as the Eagles hit .121 (48-27-173).
Van Fleet led five players in double figures in digs with 26. Quelle finished with 14 while Pochman, Conway and
Marisa Johnson each had 11. UWL had 7.0 team blocks as Maas recorded five block assists.
Against Coe (Iowa), Lawrence had a team-high 11 kills while Pochman and Johnson each had seven. Jenewein finished with 30 assists with UWL hitting .160 (35-19-100). Van Fleet recorded nine digs. The Eagles had 4.0 team blocks.
Van Fleet was one of seven players named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the invitational.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 26 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
