Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a pair of wins over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) Friday night at Mayo Field. The Eagles picked up a 3-2 victory in the completion of a suspended game from March 6 and then earned a 6-2 victory over the Tommies in the second game. UWL improves to 18-9 on the season while St. Thomas (Minn.) drops to 12-12.
The Tommies led the Eagles, 2-1, in the fourth inning when the game was suspended March 6 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota due to the time limit.
The contest, scheduled to be seven innings, remained 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh. UWL's
Jack Dwyer singled with one out and advanced to second on
Brennan Schmitt's single.
Cal Tully followed with a single score Dwyer with the tying run while Schmitt advanced to third on the play.
Zach Carney then delivered the game-winning RBI single to score Schmitt.
Connor Cook (3-4) earned the complete-game win for UWL, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks with eight strikeouts. The Eagles had six hits with Dwyer finishing 2-for-3 with two runs.
Each team scored a run in the first inning in the second game on home run as
Nate Heili hit one for UWL in the top half of the first and Rock Cates hit one for St. Thomas (Minn.) in the bottom half. The Tommies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run as Evan Kolker drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jake Smith.
UWL responded in the top of the fifth to tie the game, also coming unearned, on Heili's single scoring
Nate Roethle. The Eagles took the lead in the top of eighth as Heili scored the go-ahead run on
Mitch Sutton's single. Dwyer then hit a three-run home run giving UWL a 6-2 lead.
Mason McMahon (4-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and six walks with 14 strikeouts. The Eagles finished with seven hits as Heili went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, May 1 at UW-Stout in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
