Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout Tuesday afternoon at Nelson Field. The Eagles, now 20-9 overall and 10-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), won the opener, 8-5, and the nightcap, 4-2. UW-Stout drops to 8-21 overall and 5-13 in the conference. It marks the eighth straight season UWL has won at least 20 games overall and 10 in the WIAC.
UWL extended its winning streak to seven with Tuesday's doubleheader sweep.Â
UWL rallied to win Tuesday's opener, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth. The Eagles trailed 5-3 when
Mitch Sutton and
Brennan Schmitt hit back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game at 5-5.
Shane Coker later delivered an RBI single to score Schmitt to give UWL a 6-5 lead and
Nate Roethle followed with a run-scoring single to knock in
Brady Stolzman to make it 7-5. Stolzman had reached on a error leading to two unearned runs for the Eagles. Â

The Eagles led 2-0 after three innings with
Zach Carney scoring both runs. He came in after Sutton's RBI groundout in the first inning and
Nate Heili's RBI single in the third.  The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after Jordan Wilson opened the inning with a triple and scored on Jack Hemsath's single. Hemsath later came in on an RBI groundout by Kasey Bass.Â
UW-Stout took the lead in the sixth on Ben Vanhove's two-run home run knocking in Hemsath who had singled to start the inning.
UWL cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the seventh as Schmitt scored on
Jack Dwyer's RBI double.  UW-Stout added to its lead in the bottom of the inning on Hemsath's single knocking in Tim Bott to make it 5-3 before UWL scored five runs in the final two innings to earn the victory.
Caleb Willems (2-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed three hits, one run and one walk while striking out one.
Zach Pronschinske picked up his third save of the season, going 1.0 inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Connor Cook started for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and one walk while striking out two.Â
All nine starters recorded a hit for UWL in the opener.
Brennan Schmitt finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Heili went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Sutton had two RBI while Carney scored twice.Â
Jack Donahue (4-2) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (five earned) with two strikeouts. The Blue Devils had 10 hits as Hemsath finishd 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
In the nightcap, UWL scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings for a 3-0 lead. Dwyer walked with two outs in the top of the second, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Coker walked,
Nate Roethle's RBI single scored Dwyer with the game's first run. In the third, Heili singled to start the inning and went to second on a Blue Devils' error.
Brennan Schmitt later had an RBI double to score Heili for a 2-0 lead. Coker led off the fourth with a single and went to second on Roethle's sacrifice bunt. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on
Cal Tully's two-out single.Â
UW-Stout cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jon Krueger walked to start the inning and advanced to second on Vanhove's sacrifice bunt. Bass then delivered an RBI single to score Krueger and make it 3-1. Jared Jarvensivu's two-out single later in the inning scored Bass to make it a one-run game.
The Eagles added a run in the top of the eighth. Sutton doubled to lead-off and was replaced with pinch-runner McClellan.
Brennan Schmitt singled to move McClellan to third, who then scored on Stolzman's sacrifice bunt.
Jack Mizgalski (2-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, two run and four walks while striking out one. Pronschinske earned his fourth save of the season and second of the day, going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout.Â
The Eagles had nine hits with
Brennan Schmitt and Coker each finishing with two.Â
Brad Rindflesich (1-2) took the loss for UW-Stout, going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and three walks with two strikeouts. The Blue Devils had 11 hits with Jarvensivu finishing 3-for-4. Wilson and Hemsath each had two hits.
UWL returns to action Friday, May 4 hosting 11th-ranked UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.Â
