Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point Sunday at Copeland Park. The Pointers earned a 2-0 win the opener before the Eagles came back to take the nightcap, 11-3. UWL is now 14-9 overall and 6-4 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point is 18-5 overall and 10-1 in the conference.
The games were moved to La Crosse due to poor field conditions at UW-Stevens Point.
Ben Miller (3-1) earned the complete-game shutout for UW-Stevens Point in the opener Sunday afternoon. He went 9.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts. UWL left six runners on base in the game, including a pair in scoring position in the first inning. Miller retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.
The Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Payton Nelson scored on Neal Matson's sacrifice fly. UW-Stevens Point was the home team for the four-game weekend series. The Pointers earned a pair of wins (7-3, 4-3) in Saturday's doubleheader.
Nelson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth scored Tommy Duddleston Sunday afternoon to give UW-Stevens Point a 2-0 lead.
Jack Mizgalski (1-1) also pitched a complete-game for UWL, going 8.0 innings, allowing nine hits, two runs and one walk with six strikeouts. The Eagles were held to four hits in the opener.
UW-Stevens Point totaled nine hits in Sunday's opener with Duddleston, Ryan Stanicek, Lucas Luedtke and Christian Zamudio each finishing with two.
UWL scored seven runs through the first three innings of the nightcap as the Eagles handed the Pointers their first league loss of the season. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Nate Heili scored on
Mitch Sutton's single. UWL added four runs in the top of the second on Heili's grand slam scoring
Peyton Henry,
Cal Tully and
Zach Carney.
Tully's two-run double in the top of the third scored
Shane Coker and
Nate Roethle for a 7-0 lead.
UW-Stevens Point got on the board in the bottom of hte fourth on Nelson's RBI single. Heili and
Brady Stolzman had RBI singles in the top of the fifth for UWL to make it 9-1. Roethle's RBI groundout in the sixth and Stolzman's RBI single in the seventh made it 11-1. The Pointers tallied two times in the bottom of the seventh on a Aaron Simmons' RBI groundout Kyle Mrozinski's RBI single.
James Witt (2-0) earned the victory for UWL, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and three walks while striking out four. The Eagles had 13 hits in the nightcap as Heili went 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI. Stolzman finished 3-for-4 with two RBI while Tully went 2-for-6 with two RBI and one run. Carney scored three times.
Cale Cuddie (1-2) suffered the loss for UW-Stevens Point, going 1.1 innings. He allowed three hits, four runs and three walks while striking out one. The Pointers had six hits in the game.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 25 hosting UW-Platteville in a WIAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
