Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 24-6 dual victory at UW-Platteville Thursday night in Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles, ranked 11th in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA Division III Poll, improve to 2-0 overall and in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers drop to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC.
UWL is now 34-20 all-time in its series with UW-Platteville.
UWL won the first three matches Thursday to lead 10-0.
Sawyer Sarbacker opened with a win by decision (3-1) over UW-Platteville's Isaac Wiegel. The Eagles took a 7-0 lead as
Josh Stenger won by major decision (11-1) over Beau Harrier at 133-pounds and
Hayden Schlough made it 10-0 with a win by decision (9-4) over Chase Katzenmeyer at 141-pounds.
The Pioneers got on the board at 149-pounds as Gavin Burch won by decision (12-8) over the Eagles'
Cal Hansen to cut the lead to 10-3. UWL came back with three consecutive victories, including
Grant Zamin by technical fall (16-0, 5:15) over Brandon Lucht at 157-pounds to make it 15-3.
Jackson Schoen and
Sawyer Massie followed with wins by decision to give UWL a 21-3 advantage. Schoen won (8-3) over Jacob Carpenter at 165-pounds while Massie, ranked third in the NWCA at 174-pounds, won by decision (3-0) over Grant Wedepohl.
UW-Platteville's second-ranked Jon Goetz won by decision (5-3) over UWL's
Isaac Lahr at 184-pounds to cut the Eagles' lead to 21-6. UWL won the final two matches as
Jake Meyer won by decision (5-0) over Zach Coffeen at 197-pounds and
Konrad Ernst, ranked fourth in the NWCA, won by decision (4-3) over Lucius Rinehart at 285-pounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 17 at the Augsburg University (Minn.) Auggie Open at 9 a.m.
