La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a 65-46 victory over Macalester (Minn.) Sunday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 1-0 while the Scots fall to 0-2.
Macalester (Minn.) would start the game with an 8-0 run before
Dani Craig broke it with a made jumper with 6:46 remaining for UWL. The Scots largest lead in the first quarter would be at 13-4 from a Luci Swift three-pointer with 4:09 left. Macalester (Minn.) led 17-9 after the first quarter.
Delaney Schoenenberger
Delaney Schoenenberger would convert an three-point play with 7:52 remaining in the second quarter as the Eagles started the period on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 17-15. The Scots responded with a 11-3 run to lead 28-18 with 4:32 left in the period after a pair of Justine Barraza free throws. Macalester (Minn.) led 31-24 at halftime.
Craig opened the second half with a three-pointer that sparked a 13-0 run for UWL as the Eagles took a 37-31 advantage. UWL led 42-39 after three quarters.
The Eagles scored the first 17 points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Scots, 23-7 overall in the period. UWL outscored Macalester (Minn.), 41-15, in the second half.
UWL shot 37.1% from the field, including 35.0% (seven-of-20) from three-point range, and 63.2% (12-of-19) at the free throw line.
Craig led the Eagles with 14 points while shooting four-of-five from three-point range.
Emma Gamoke added 11 points while Schoenenberger and
Lexie Higgins each had 10 points. Higgins led all players with nine rebounds. Schoenenberger finished with eight rebounds.
Macalester (Minn.) shot 25.9% from the field, including 42.9% (nine-of-21) from three-point range, and 81.8% (nine-of-11) at the line. Barraza had a game-high 22 points. Kayla Togneri had a game-high seven blocks.
UWL returns to action Friday, November 16 versus Calvin College (Mich.) at 5 p.m. in the Paul F. Knueppel Classic at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
