UWL Earns Win over Calvin; Five Players in Double Figures

Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 75-52 victory over Calvin College (Mich.) Friday night at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Knights of Calvin (Mich.) drop to 2-1 on the year.

In the first meeting between the teams since the 1987-88 season, UWL never trailed in Friday's game, racing out to a 19-5 lead with 2:15 left in the first half after an Emma Gamoke layup. The Eagles led, 19-6, after the first quarter. Ava Kramer's jumper with 5:27 remaining in the second quarter gave UWL a 31-11 lead and the Eagles led, 43-28, at halftime.

Calvin (Mich.) opened the third quarter on a 11-4 run to cut the deficit to 47-39, but UWL responded with a 14-0 run to lead 61-39 with 1:08 left in the third quarter. The Eagles led, 61-42, after three quarters and the Knights could get no closer the rest of the game.

UWL shot 38.9% from the field, including 40.0% (eight-of-20) from three-point range, and 68.8% (11-of-16) at the free throw line. The Eagles outrebounded the Knights, 42-39, while finishing with 16 steals and 12 assists. UWL scored 37 points off 25 Calvin (Mich.) turnovers.

Delaney Schoenenberger led five players in double figures for the Eagles with 14 points while Kramer and Gamoke each finished with 13. Carly Coulthart scored 11 points while Dani Craig added 10. Lexie Higgins finished with eight points and team-high seven rebounds.

It marked the first time UWL had five players score in double figures since a 73-63 victory over Luther College (Iowa) on November 15, 2016.

Calvin (Mich.) shot 36.7% from the field, including 27.3% (six-of-22) from three-point range, and 58.8% (10-of-17) at the line. Rachel Warners led the Knights with 12 points while Stephanie Coors finished with 10. Gabby Timmer had a game-high 14 rebounds.

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 17 versus Saint Mary's College (Ind.) at 1 p.m. in the Paul F. Knueppel Classic.
