La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team remained undefeated in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 6-2 victory over UW-Platteville Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 10-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Pioneers fall to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC.
UWL scored five goals in the first half for the second straight game after a 6-0 win over UW-Whitewater October 6.
Maya Schmitt got the scoring started Wednesday night at 17:26 assisted by
Natalie Herzog. It was her sixth of the season.
Margaret Harings tallied the next two goal for the Eagles, the first coming at 18:22 and the second at 24:45.
Kaitlyn Villars recorded the assist on the first goal and
Natalie Jamison on the second Harings' goal. She now has seven goals on the season.
Cassie Handrick gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead with her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season. She scored at 27:29, assisted by
Alex Cording, and at 28:03, assisted by Herzog. The Eagles led 5-0 at halftime, outshooting the Pioneers, 15-1.
UW-Platteville got on the scoreboard early in the second half with Amber Lueder scoring at 45:43 assisted by Caelyn Steffens. It was her eighth goal of the year. Cording gave UWL a 6-1 lead with her third goal of the year at 73:40 assisted by Handrick and Schmitt.
Steffens finished the scoring for UW-Platteville at 87:26 assisted by Lueder. It was Steffens' 22nd goal of the season. She ranks second in NCAA Division III in goals and points (49).
UWL finished with 31 shots in the game, including 21 on goal. UW-Platteville totaled four shots with three on goal.
Lily Brock (8-1-1) earned the win for the Eagles while not allowing a goal in the first half with one save.
Kennedy Brault (28:40) and
Meghan Cannestra (16:20) played the second half. Kathryn Flaherty had 15 saves for the Pioneers.
UWL earned its ninth straight win with Wednesday's victory, the second-longest winning streak in school history. The Eagles won a school record 16 consecutive in 2017.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 13 at UW-River Falls at 4 p.m.
