Box Score 2 Northfield, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep over St. Olaf College (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Carlander Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 16-2, and the nightcap, 6-4. Both games were seven innings. UWL improves to 22-14 overall while St. Olaf (Minn.) drops to 11-22.
UWL has won nine of its last 11 games after Tuesday's doubleheader sweep.
In the opener, the Eagles set season-highs for runs (16) and hits (21). UWL's 21 hits are tied for ninth-most in a game. The team had a school record 27 hits versus Concordia University Wisconsin (March 16, 2011) and Macalester College, Minn. (March 16, 2014).
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Tuesday's opening game as
Carter Hoffman scored on
Brady Stolzman's two-out single. The Eagles added four runs in the second inning for a 5-0 lead.
Alex Brown and Hoffman each had an RBI double in the inning while
Nate Heili had an RBI ground. UWL added to its lead with three runs in the top of the fourth on
Brennan Schmitt's run-scoring single and
Sam Prissel's two-run double.
St. Olaf (Minn.) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-1 on Ryan Iverson's RBI double. Hoffman scored on a St. Olaf (Minn.) error in the top of the sixth and UWL scored seven times on eight hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Jack Dwyer and
Cal Tully each had two-run doubles. The Oles finished the scoring in the bottom of the inning on Stephon Mitchell's sacrifice fly.
Prissel finished 4-for-5 for UWL with two runs and two RBI while Hoffman and
Nick Pescheck each went 3-for-4 with two runs.
Zach Pronschinske (1-1) earned the win for the Eagles, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and three walks with three strikeouts.
Alex Schulte recorded his first save, going 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run with one strikeout.
St. Olaf (Minn.) finished with seven hits with Iverson and Ryan Torbenson each going 2-for-3. Thomas Peterson (0-3) took the loss for the Oles, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs while striking out two.
In the nightcap, UWL took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on
Alex Barnard's RBI groundout and run-scoring singles by
Alex Brown and Pescheck. St. Olaf (Minn.) cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on Jack Hultstrand's RBI single.
The Eagles came right back in the top of the third with three runs for a 6-1 advantage.
Connor Cook and Barnard each recorded RBI singles while Brown had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. The Oles finished the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on Sam Stuckmayer's two-run home run and Dylan Blake's infield single to knock in a run. St. Olaf (Minn.) stranded two runners in the fifth and one in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Both teams finished with 11 hits in Tuesday's nightcap. Heili, Brown and
Alex Robson each totaled two hits for UWL with Barnard and Brown each recording two RBI.
James Witt (1-1) earned the victory for UWL, going 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs with two strikeouts.
Nic Pierick picked up his second save of the year, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk while recording three saves.
Stuckmayer finished 3-for-4 for St. Olaf (Minn.) with two RBI and one run while Blake and Luke Dahl each had two hits. Ben Arndt suffered the loss for the Oles, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk with one strikeout.
UWL returns to action Friday, May 5 at UW-Platteville at 1 p.m.
