UWL Places Second at WIAC Championships; Ostrovsky Wins Uneven Bars

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team placed second at the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) and National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) West Regional Friday night in McCown Gym at Winona State University (Minn.).

UWL finished with a team score of 189.700 while UW-Whitewater captured the title with a score of 191.850.  UW-Stout placed third (188.750) followed by Winona State University, Minn. (186.750), UW-Eau Claire (186.525), UW-Oshkosh (185.900), Gustavus Adolphus College, Minn. (185.625) and Hamline University, MInn. (183.775).
 
The conference meet also served as the West Region qualifier for the NCGA Championship scheduled for Friday-Saturday, March 31-April 1 at UW-Stout.  With its top-three finishes, UW-Whitewater, UWL, and UW-Stout advance to the NCGA meet.

UWL scored 47.275 on the vault Friday while finishing with 47.750 on the uneven parallel bars; 46.900 on the balance beam and 47.775 on the floor exercise.

The Eagles' Abby Ostrovsky won the uneven parallel bars (9.725) Friday night, becoming the 14th gymnast (16 total titles) in school history to win the event. Her score of 9.725 was a career-high. It marks the third straight year UWL has won the uneven parallel bars after Amy Enright took the crown in 2015 and 2016.

Samantha Wiekamp placed third in the all-around (37.675) Friday.

Other top-12 finishes for the Eagles included Jessica Ahrens tying for fourth on the balance beam (season-high 9.575) while Enright tied for fifth on the uneven parallel bars (9.550).  Elsa Spitzmueller was fifth on the floor exercise (9.700).

Lauren Wilson tied for eighth (9.525) on the uneven parallel bars with Wiekamp and Savannah Farrell tied for 11th (9.475). Farrell tied her season-high.  She also tied for eighth on the vault (9.500) while Kari Willett was 12th (9.500). Willett finished tied for eighth on the floor exercise (9.625).

The top-six finishers in each event receive all-conference designation.

UWL returns to action Friday, March 31 at the NCGA Team and All-Around Championships at UW-Stout. Start time is 6 p.m. in the Johnson Fieldhouse in the Sports & Fitness Center. The individual event championships are scheduled for Saturday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
