La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five straight with a 58-47 victory over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season while the Spartans drop to 2-6. The all-time series between the teams is now tied, 4-4.
UWL led by as many as six points in the first quarter before taking a 11-8 lead at the end of the quarter. The Eagles led 20-16 with 3:22 left in the second quarter on
Dani Craig's three-pointer. Dubuque (Iowa) then used a 9-0 run to end the half and led 25-20 at halftime. Madison Boer hit a jumper with :46 remaining to give the Spartans a 22-20 lead and Kia Dwight's three-point field goal with :10 left gave Dubuque (Iowa) the five-point halftime lead.
The Spartans led 34-31 with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter when the Eagles used a 18-5 run to end the quarter and to lead 49-39. Craig's three-point field goal with :19 left and
Elise DeNoyer's layup at the buzzer provided the final five points of the quarter. The Eagles outscored the Spartans, 29-14, in the third quarter. UWL opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 56-41 and Dubuque (Iowa) could get no closer than the final margin of 11 points.
UWL shot 35.5% from the field, including 32.1% (nine-of-28) from three-point range, and 55.6% (five-of-nine) at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 56.0% (14-of-25) from the field in the second half, including 50.0% (six-of-12) from three-point range. UWL's nine three-point field goals in the game tied a season-high.
Craig led UWL with a season-high 17 points, finishing five-of-11 from three-point range. She also had nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Four UWL starters scored in double figures.
Taylor Nelson had 11 points while DeNoyer and Sydney Kannel each finished with 10 points. DeNoyer recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds.
Kylee Marks had 10 rebounds.
Dubuque (Iowa) shot 31.7% from the field, including 27.8% (five-of-18) from three-point range, and 57.1% (four-of-seven) at the line. Abbey Meyer led the Spartans with 20 points. Boer had eight points.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, December 13 hosting Marian University (Wis.) at 5:30 p.m.
