UW-La Crosse Rally Falls Short at Saint Benedict

St. Joseph, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 50-49 at College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) Saturday afternoon in the Saint Benedict Tournament. The Eagles drop to 1-1 on the season while the Blazers improve to 2-0. 

The game was tied twice in the first quarter before Saint Benedict (Minn.) took a 16-12 lead at the end of the quarter. UWL cut the lead to 20-17 with 6:37 left in the second quarter on a Greta Saulic layup, but Saint Benedict (Minn.) used a 8-2 run to lead 28-19 after a Chelsey Guetter three-point field goal. The Blazers led 28-22 at halftime.

Saint Benedict (Minn.) led 34-26 with 5:54 left in the third quarter when UWL went on an 11-0 run to lead 37-34 with 1:29 remaining. The Eagles led 37-36 at the end of third quarter. UWL led 42-39 with 6:33 left in the game after an Elise DeNoyer layup, but Saint Benedict (Minn.) later took a 50-45 advantage with 1:48 remaining on a pair of free throws from Niki Fokken. DeNoyer's layup with 1:35 left cut  the deficit to 50-47 and after a missed Saint Benedict (Minn.) jumper, Taylor Nelson hit a pair of free throws with :59 left to cut the lead to 50-49. The Blazers missed a jumper with :22 remaining, but Nelson's jumper at the buzzer missed and Saint Benedict (Minn.) held on for the victory. 

UWL shot 34.0% from the field, including 20.0% (three-of-15) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the free throw line. DeNoyer led the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds. Ava Kramer finished with eight points for UWL while Dani Craig totaled six. Saulic, Nelson, Kylee Marks and Shayla Karge each had four points.

DeNoyer was one of five players named to the all-tournament team. She averaged 13.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games. Along with the 14 points and nine rebounds Saturday, DeNoyer had 12 points and 12 rebounds in UWL's 67-59 victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Friday.

Saint Benedict (Minn.) shot 41.9% from the field, including 33.3% (four-of-12) from three-point range, and 50.0% (10-of-20) at the free throw line. Guetter led the Blazers with 13 points while Fokken finished with 11. 

UWL returns to action Tuesday, November 21 at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
