St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 67-59 at 16th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Tuesday night on Gus Young Court. The Eagles drop to 1-2 on the season while the Gusties improve to 2-0. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) is ranked 16th on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Preseason Poll.
The game was tied three times in the first quarter, including 9-9 with 3:21 remaining, when Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 13-9. Miranda Rice's layup to open the second quarter gave the Gusties a 15-9 lead, but the Eagles used a 9-2 run to take a 18-17 lead with 5:45 left on Kylee Marks' layup. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) came back to lead 25-22 at halftime.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) never trailed in the second half. The Gusties led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, including 46-38 with 1:33 remaining. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) led 48-43 at the end of third quarter.
UWL cut the lead to 51-48 with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter on Elise DeNoyer's layup, but back-to-back three-pointers from Taylor Anderson gave Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) a 57-48 advantage with 6:44 left. Anderson hit three straight three-point field goals in the fourth quarter. The Gusties led 59-48 with 5:38 remaining when the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 59-55 with 3:56 left. DeNoyer later hit one-of-two free throws with 1:16 remaining to make it 62-59, but Kendall Thompson's jumper with :34 left gave Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) at 64-59 lead.
UWL shot 46.2% from the field, including 46.7% (seven-of-15) from three-point range, and 36.4% (four-of-11) at the free throw line. DeNoyer led the Eagles with her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She also had four assists. Dani Craig finished with 12 points and four rebounds while Marks totaled six points and seven rebounds.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) shot 40.3% from the field, including 28.6% (six-of-21) from three-point range, and 61.1% (11-of-18) at the line. Rice led four Gusties in double figures with 18 points while Anderson finished with 16, Thompson with 12 and Justine Lee with 11. Anderson was five-of-seven from three-point range while finishing with five assists. Thompson had a team-high eight rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 25 hosting Luther College (Iowa) at 5 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic.
