UWL Advances to NCAA III Quarterfinals with Win over WashU

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team advanced to the 2017 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) Friday afternoon at Stagg Field at the University of Chicago (Ill.). The Eagles, ranked 15th on the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, improve to 20-1-3 on the season and will face third-ranked and host Chicago (Ill.) Saturday, November 18 at 1 p.m. in the national quarterfinals.  Chicago (Ill.), 19-2 on the season, advanced to the NCAA III Quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Wheaton College (Ill.) Friday.

Washington-St. Louis (Mo.), the defending national champions, ends its season at 17-2-1. 

UWL and Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) were scoreless at halftime Friday after the Eagles recorded four shots and the Bears five in the first 45:00. Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) had three shots in the four four minutes of the game. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 49:42 as Cassie Handrick scored her sixth goal of the season on a ball that bounced through the box. Mary Mansker recorded the assists. UWL made it 2-0 at 79:48 with Natalie Herzog notching her fourth goal of the season with Alex Cording getting the assist.

Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) quickly responded with a goal at 80:43 from Hannah Menard, her second goal of the year. It was an unassisted goal on a 30-yard strike. The Bears had a pair of shots blocked in the final minute as the Eagles earned the victory. 

UWL totaled nine shots in the game, including four on goal. Kaitlyn Villars finished with three shots while Handrick and Cording each had two. Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) finished with 13 shots, including four on goal. Darcy Cunningham led the Bears with four shots. 

Lily Brock earned the victory for UWL, recording three saves. Emma Greenfield finished with one save for Washington-St. Louis (Mo.). The Bears also had one team save.

UWL had four corner kicks and Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) finished with seven. 

UWL and Chicago (Ill.) will be meeting for the first time since the 2009 season. The Maroons lead the all-time series, 9-1-1. Fourth-year UWL head coach Jason Murphy served as an assistant women's soccer coach at Chicago (Ill.) for two years.
