UWL Advances to NCAA Division III Round of Sixteen

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team advanced to the round of 16 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships with a 1-0 win over the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles, ranked 15th in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, improve to 19-1-3 on the season. 

UWL advances to face the winner of Washington University (Mo.)/Wittenberg University (Ohio) game scheduled for Sunday night. The University of Chicago (Ill.) will face Wheaton College (Ill.) on the opposite side in the other round of 16. The round of 16 will be held Friday-Saturday, November 17-18 or Saturday-Sunday, November 18-19.

St. Thomas (Minn.) ends its season at 13-4-3. The Tommies, making their 11th appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships, received an at-large bid. St. Thomas (Minn.) earned a 1-0 win over Wartburg College (Iowa) in Saturday's first round.  

It was the second meeting of the season for St. Thomas (Minn.) and UWL after the teams finished in a 2-2 double overtime tie September 3 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

UWL, making its second appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships, advanced to Sunday's second round after a 2-0 win over The College of St. Scholatica (Minn.) Saturday. 

The teams were scoreless at halftime Sunday with St. Thomas (Minn.) recording 13 shots and UWL seven. 

Natalie Herzog scored the game's only goal at 57:47 on Margaret Harings' assist. It was Herzog's third goal of the season.  

UWL finished with 17 shots Sunday, including seven on goal. Harings and Alex Cording led the Eagles with four shots with Harings recording two shots on goal and Cording one. UWL finished with 10 shots in the second half while St. Thomas (Minn.) totaled five. 

The Tommies had 18 shots in the game, including 10 on goal. Brielle Bierman had five shots, including three on goal. Mallory DeBoom and Liz Luotto each had three shots with one on goal. 

Lily Brock recorded 10 saves for UWL to earn the shutout. The Eagles recorded their 14th shutout of the season. Olivia Elvidge finished with six saves for St. Thomas (Minn.).
