UWL Sets School Record for Wins with Victory at MSOE

Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked 19th on the United Soccer Coaches National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Poll, earned a 4-2 victory at MSOE (Wis.) Sunday afternoon at Viets Field.

The Eagles improve to 15-1-2 on the season with their 10th straight win while the Raiders drop to 10-8. With the win, UWL sets a single-season school record for victories, surpassing the total of 14 in 2016.  The 10 consecutive wins is also a school record. 

UWL captured the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular-season championship with a 2-0 victory at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon. It is the Eagles' third regular-season conference title in school history (1996, 2015, 2017). With the championship, UWL will be the top-seed for the WIAC Tournament and host a semifinal game Thursday, November 2.  

UWL, ranked 21st on D3soccer.com, led 3-0 at halftime in Sunday's victory. Maya Schmitt scored the first two goals of the game, the first coming at 17:51 assisted by Cassie Handrick. Schmitt made it 2-0 at 33:06 off a Tori Barnhart assist.  Maddie Granos finished the scoring in the first half at 40:00 as Rachel Rogahn recorded an assist. 

MSOE (Wis.) cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of goals in the second half. Jeray Riffel scored at 52:22 assisted by Gracie Horton to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brooke Zidek made it 3-2 at 60:13 with an assisted goal.

UWL regained its two-goal lead at 86:35 as Kaitlyn Villars scored. Alex Cording and Hayley Hargroder had the assists. 

UWL finished with 17 shots, including 12 on goal. The Eagles outshot the Raiders, 12-1, in the first half. Kennedy Brault earned the win for UWL while playing 70:28, finishing with three saves. Meghan Cannestra played 19:32 and recorded two saves.  Abbie Lorenz played the first half for MSOE (Wis.), finishing with five saves, while Mary McFee played the second half and recorded two saves. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 28 in the regular-season finale hosting UW-Oshkosh for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
