Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 51-49 overtime loss at 15th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Kolf Sports Center. The Eagles drop to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 16-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked 15th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, scored the first six points of the game. UWL scored the next four points to cut the lead to two. The Titans led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter. UW-Oshkosh led 21-10 with 4:57 left in the second quarter before leading 25-17 at halftime as each team scored seven points in the quarter.
The Titans took their largest lead of the game at 30-17 with 8:34 remaining after a Emma Melotik three-pointer. The Eagles used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 30-24 with 2:57 left after a
Delaney Schoenenberger layup. UW-Oshkosh led 35-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Using a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter, UWL took its first lead at 36-35 with 6:17 left on a Schoenenberger jumper. UW-Oshkosh regained a 43-40 lead with 2:08 left on a Eliza Campbell layup before Schoenenberger cut the lead back to 43-42 with 1:51 remaining with a layup. After each team missed a pair of jumpers, Kylie Moe hit one-of-two free throws with :08 left to give UW-Oshkosh a 44-42 advantage.
Rachel Atchison then tied the game for UWL with a layup with :02 left to force overtime.
Taylor Nelson's three-pointer gave the Eagles a 47-44 overtime lead with 3:38 remaining, but the Titans scored the next five points to lead 49-47. Morgan Kokta tied the game with a pair of free throws with 2:12 remaining at 47-47 after an Eagles' turnover, Taylor Schmidt's jumper with 1:19 left gave UW-Oshkosh a two-point lead. UWL tied the contest at 49-49 with :23 left on a
MaKenzie Miller layup before Schmidt hit the game-winning jumper for UW-Oshkosh with :03 remaining. Atchison missed a potential game-winning three-point field goal with :01 left.
UWL shot 37.3% from the field, including 17.6% (three-of-17) from three-point range, and 66.7% (two-of-three) at the free throw line. Miller led the Eagles with 12 points and 13 rebounds, recording her fifth straight double-double and sixth overall. Elise DeNoyer finished with 10 points and eight rebounds while Schoenenberger added nine points and five rebounds.
UW-Oshkosh shot 30.0% from the field, including 20.0% (five-of-25) from three-point range, and 54.5% (12-of-22) at the line. Schmidt led the Titans with 12 points while Moe finished with 10.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 28 at 17th-ranked UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m.
