Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 67-53 at 17th-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon in Kachel Gymnasium. The Eagles drop to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks improve to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
UWL scored the first five points of the game Saturday on a
MaKenzie Miller jumper and
Alyssa Clemment three-point field goal. The Eagles led 14-11 after the first quarter. UWL led throughout the second quarter, including 22-20 with 4:03 left when it went on a 8-2 run to end the half and lead 30-22.
The Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 39-29 with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter on a Miller layup. UW-Whitewater, ranked 17th on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, cut the deficit to 43-36 at the end of the third quarter. The Warhawks used a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 50-43 advantage with 6:04 remaining. UWL came back to cut the deficit to 54-50 with 3:03 left on a Miller jumper, but UW-Whitewater went on an 9-0 run to lead 63-50.
UWL shot 31.3% from the field, including 31.3% (five-of-16) from three-point range, and 80.0% (eight-of-10) at the free throw line. Miller recorded her sixth straight double-double, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Elise DeNoyer finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
UW-Whitewater shot 34.5% from the field, including 26.7% (four-of-15) from three-point range, and 82.1% (23-of-28) at the line. Malia Smith led four players in double figures with 17 points while Olivia Freckmann finished with 12 points. Brooke Trewyn had 11 points and 12 rebounds while Reilly Stewart finished with 10 points off the bench.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 1 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
