Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 25-9 dual victory at UW-Platteville Thursday night in Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers drop to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
UWL is fifth and UW-Platteville 11th in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings. The Eagles won seven of 10 matches Thursday.
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead after the first match as Zachary Stenger won by decision (8-6) over the Eagles'
Nelson Baker. UWL came back with four straight victories to take a 15-3 advantage. The 133-pound match featured a pair of ranked wrestlers as UWL's
Ryan Weinmann, ranked eighth, won by decision (6-2) over UW-Platteville's Scott Arneson, ranked 10th. Weinmann's win tied the dual, 3-3.
Dustin Weinmann, ranked first in the nation at 141-pounds, gave UWL a 6-3 lead after winning by decision (13-7) over Alex Costello. UWL's
Mason Geary, ranked 10th this week at 149-pounds, recorded a win by technical fall (16-0, 4:27) over UW-Platteville's Carter Barkema and the Eagles'
Jackson Schoen won by major decision (8-0) over Dustin Reynolds at 157-pounds to give UWL a 15-3 lead.
UW-Platteville cut the lead to 15-6 with Isaac Brosinski winning by decision (8-4) over UWL's
Clark Doyle at 165-pounds.
Richard Carlson, ranked fourth at 174-pounds for the Eagles, responded with a win by decision (7-1) over Jon Goetz to make it 18-6.
The 184-pound match also featured two ranked wrestlers with the Pioneers' Grant Wedepohl, ranked ninth, won by decision (4-2) over the Eagles' 10th-ranked
Alex Friedman to cut UWL's lead to 18-9.
The Eagles took the final two duals as
Michael Otomo won by major decision (13-4) over Cody Meyer at 197-pounds and
Konrad Ernst won by decision (6-4) over D'Andre Johnson at 285.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 14 at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational at 9 a.m.
