UWL Splits Doubleheader with St. Scholastica

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park, earning a 5-4 win in the opener before falling 12-8 in the nightcap.  The Eagles, ranked 18th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, are 10-5 on the season while the Saints are 8-7.

In the opener, Caleb Boushley (2-0) earned the victory for UWL.  He went 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out seven.  Brock Rude picked up his first save, going 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, two runs and one walk.

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with Justin Anderson scoring on Travis Buxton-Verstegen's single down the right field line.  The Eagles added to their lead with solo runs in the fourth and fifth to make it 3-0.  Taylor Kohlwey hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead and Ben Morgan scored an unearned run on Joel Zyhowski's RBI groundout.

UWL took a 5-0 lead in the sixth as Kohlwey and Anderson hit back-to-back doubles to make it 4-0.  Anderson later scored on Morgan's RBI single.

St. Scholastica (Minn.) cut UWL's lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but stranded the bases loaded.  The Saints scored twice in the top of the ninth after Trevor Bernsdorf walked with two outs and scored on Steven Neutzling's two-run home run to right center field.  Rude was able to retire Chris Olson on a ground out to end the game.

UWL totaled 10 hits in Sunday's opener as Kohlwey, Anderson and Buxton-Verstegen each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Kohlwey and Anderson both scored twice.

Daniel Wood (1-2) took the loss for St. Scholastica (Minn.), going 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs (four earned) and one walk with one strikeout.  The Saints totaled nine hits. Neutzling and Riley Bernsdorf each had two hits with Neutzling finishing with two runs and RBI.  Trevor Bernsdorf also scored twice.

The teams combined for 20 runs and 28 hits in the nightcap as St. Scholastica (Minn.) rallied for seven runs in in the top of the eighth and scored 11 runs in the last three innings.

UWL took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Zyhowski tripled to start the game and scored on Alex Cordova's RBI single to make it 1-0.  Kohlwey followed with a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead.  Zyhowski's single in the bottom of the fourth knocked in Morgan for a 4-0 Eagles' lead. St. Scholastica (Minn.) cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth on Sam Christofferson solo home run, but Anderson hit a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the fifth to give UWL a 5-1 lead.

Al Marolt's single scored Neutzling in the top of the seventh for the Saints to cut the lead to 5-2 before Kohlwey scored in the bottom of the frame on Buxton-Verstegen's double play grounder to make it 6-2.

St. Scholastica (Minn.) rallied for seven runs on six hits in the top of the eighth to take a 9-6 lead.  Trevor Bernsdorf and Marolt had RBI singles to cut the lead to 6-4 and Conor Wollenzien later followed with a two-out pinch-hit grand slam to give the Saints their first lead of the day at 8-6.  Austin Colvard's RBI triple later made it 9-6.  The Saints added three runs in the top of the ninth on a Michael Grove single and Colvard's two-out two-run single for a 12-6 lead.

UWL scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth as Zyhowski walked and scored on Kohlwey's second two-run home run of the game and third home run of the day.

Nic Pierick (1-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing four hits and four runs with one strikeout.  Four relief pitchers went 2.0 innings for the Eagles, allowing seven hits, seven runs and two walks with five strikeouts.  Troy Kenkel started for UWL, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and three walks with six strikeouts. 

UWL totaled 14 hits in Sunday's nightcap with five players recording at least two.  Kohlwey went 3-for-5 with three runs, two home runs and four RBI while Zyhowski finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Anderson went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.  Zyhowski had a double and triple. Morgan and Seth Feldman each had two hits.

Jordan Risse (3-0) picked up the victory for St. Scholastica (Minn.), pitching 7.0 innings, allowing 13 hits and six runs with eight strikeouts. Jake Turner earned his third save, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, two runs and two walks with two strikeouts. 

The Saints also had 14 hits in the second game with Colvard finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run.  Marolt went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Christofferson and Haydn Lanoue each scored twice.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 9 hosting UW-Platteville in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams.  Game one of the doubleheader starts at noon at Copeland Park.
