Box Score 2 Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Max Molock Field. The Eagles won the opener, 9-2, and the nightcap, 8-1. Both games were seven innings. UWL improves to 8-4 on the season while Saint Mary's (Minn.) drops to 12-5.
UWL is 18th in this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll while Saint Mary's (Minn.) is receiving votes. The teams were meeting for the first time since 2011.
In Tuesday's opener, UWL took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as
Alex Cordova and
Taylor Kohlwey singled with one out and scored on
Justin Anderson's three-run home run. The Eagles added to their lead with a one run in the top of the second as
Alex Brown scored on
Joel Zyhowski's single.
UWL made it 6-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning with Brown and
Nate Heili both scoring on a Saint Mary's (Minn.) error. Brown and Heili scored on another Cardinals' error in the top of the sixth and Zyhowski scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly for a 9-0 lead.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth as Jake Barry and Jake Mencacci both came in on Cale Pieczynski's two-out double. Barry and Menacci both walked in the inning.
Caleb Boushley (1-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.
Travis Stahulak pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, two runs and three walks while striking out one.
Nic Pierick went 1.0 inning, allowing one hit.
The Eagles finished with 13 hits in the opener as every starter had at least one. Cordova, Kohlwey, Brown and Heili each finished with two hits with Anderson recording four RBI. Brown scored three times with Heili scoring twice.
Ben Johnson (2-3) suffered the loss for Saint Mary's (Minn.), pitching 5.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and nine runs (six earned) with two strikeouts. Pieczynski finished 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Cardinals while Joe Seegers and Ben Buerkle each had two hits.
In the nightcap, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Anderson's single to score Zyhowski. Saint Mary's (Minn.) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with Buerkle scoring on Bob Kinne's RBI double.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the fifth as Heili doubled to start the inning and scored on Zyhowski's double. Cordova followed with a single to advance Zyhowski to third, where he then scored on Kohlwey's sacrifice fly.
Seth Feldman's RBI single in the top of the sixth scored pinch runner
Sam Prissel for a 4-1 advantage. UWL finished the scoring with four runs in the top of the seventh with Cordova scoring on a Saint Mary's (Minn.) error for a 5-1 lead. Kohlwey and
Carter Hoffman scored on Prissel's two-run triple to make it 7-1 and
Travis Buxton-Verstegen's RBI single knocked in Prissel to finish the scoring.
Troy Kenkel (2-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's nightcap, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and one run with six strikeouts.
Jameson Lavery pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one walk.
UWL totaled 13 hits as every starter recorded at least one. Buxton-Verstegen finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Feldman went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Six different players scored a run for the Eagles.
Jacob Dawson (1-1) took the loss for Saint Mary's (Minn.). He went 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and two walks while striking out four. Four different players had a hit for the Cardinals.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 2 at The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) in a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
