Box Score 2 Auburndale, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a doubleheader with Rowan University (N.J.) Thursday at Lake Myrtle Field, winning the opener 8-3 before dropping the nightcap, 3-1. Both games were seven innings. UWL, ranked fifth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, is now 5-3 on the season while Rowan (N.J.) is 6-6.
In the opener, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Alex Cordova scored an unearned run on
Justin Anderson's fielder's choice. UWL tallied two runs in the top of the second for a 3-0 lead as
Eric Vatch's RBI double and Cordova's run-scoring single. The Eagles added to their lead with four runs in the fourth inning with RBI singles from
Alex Brown,
Travis Buxton-Verstegen and
Joel Zyhowski. Anderson's sacrifice fly to score
Taylor Kohlwey in the top of the fourth made it 8-0. Rowan (N.J.) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh as all three runs were unearned after two UWL errors. Evan Hughes had an RBI groundout.
Jameson Lavery (2-0) earned the win in the opener for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings allowing six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.
Jake Stern pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and three unearned runs.
The Eagles totaled 13 hits with Kohlwey,
Carter Hoffman, Buxton-Verstegen and Vatch each finishing with two. Buxton-Verstegen scored twice.
Rob Grilli (1-1) suffered the loss for Rowan (N.J.), going 3.0 innings, alloiwng nine hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out one. The Profs had seven different players with a hit.
In the nightcap, the Profs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Hughes single scoring Eric Oliver. The game remained 1-0 until Matt Jolly hit a two-run home run for Rowan (N.J.) in the top of the sixth to knock in Hughes. UWL cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning as Kohlwey doubled with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on wild pitch.
Both pitchers threw complete-games in Thursday's nightcap. UWL's
Troy Kenkel (1-1) suffered the loss, going 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five. The Eagles had five players with a hit.
Eric Shugars (1-0) earned the victory for Rowan (N.J.), pitching 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run and two walks with four strikeouts. The Profs totaled nine hits with Shane Brown and Monny Strickland with two hits.
UWL returns to action Friday, March 18 with a pair of games, facing Wiliam Paterson University (N.J.) at 8:15 a.m. (Central) and Benedictine University (Ill.) at 11:45 a.m. (Central).
