Box Score 2 Auburndale, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Ripon College (Wis.) Tuesday afternoon in Lake Myrtle Field. The Eagles, ranked fifth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 18-0, and the nightcap, 15-5. Both games were seven innings. UWL improves to 4-2 on the season while Ripon (Wis.) drops to 1-5.
In the opener,
Travis Stahulak (1-0) picked up the win for UWL. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and four walks with 13 strikeouts.
Nic Pierick pitched 1.0 inning, recording three strikeouts.
The Eagles scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first on eight hits and three Red Hawks' errors. Seven different players had an RBI in the inning, including a two-run single from
Alex Cordova. UWL added two runs in the second inning, including an RBI single by
Taylor Kohlwey.
Justin Anderson had an RBI single in the fifth inning to knock in Kohlwey, who had tripled. The Eagles finished the scoring with three runs in the sixth with Cordova and
Alex Barnard recording an RBI.
UWL finished with 16 hits as every starter had at least one. Cordova finished 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI while Kohlwey went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Anderson and
Travis Buxton-Verstegen each had two hits with Anderson recording two runs and two RBI.
Brice Swick (0-1) suffered the loss for Ripon (Wis.), pitching 0.1 of an innning, allowing seven hits, 12 runs (one earned) and two walks with one strikeout. Isiah Ramos and Nick Schmitt each had one hit for the Red Hawks.
In the nightcap, UWL tallied 20 hits in the 15-5 victory. Anderson's RBI double scored Kohlwey in the top of the first and
Carter Hoffman knocked in Anderson with a single to give UWL a 2-0 lead. The Eagles made it 3-0 in the top of the second as
Alex Brown scored on a wild pitch. Ripon (Wis.) cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Swick single.
UWL took a 7-1 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth as
Seth Feldman, Cordova, Kohlwey and Anderson each had an RBI. Josh Oswald's double in the bottom of the fourth cut the Red Hawks' deficit to 7-2, but the Eagles scored two runs in the fifth as Feldman had an RBI triple and later scored on a Ripon (Wis.) error. The Red Hawks tallied three times in the bottom of the fifth before the Eagles scored twice in the sixth and four times in the seventh. Hoffman had a run-scoring triple and Brown sacrifice for an RBI in the sixth. Cordova,
Mitch Sutton, Hoffman and Brown had RBI singles in the seventh.
Logan Mallek (1-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 1.2 innings in relief. He allowed three hits while striking out three.
Brock Rude started for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and walks with one strikeout.
Anderson went 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Cordova, Hoffman, Brown and Feldman each had three hits. Hoffman had a team-high three RBI while Cordova, Anderson, Brown and Feldman each had two. Five different players scored twice for UWL.
Aaron Langdon (1-1) took the loss for Ripon (Wis.), going 5.0 innings, allowing 12 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and three walks with four strikeouts. Oswald, Randy Finger and Michael Barnes each had two hits.
UWL returns to action Thursday, March 17 facing Rowan University (N.J.) in a doubleheader starting at 8 a.m. (Central).
