Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 24-12 victory at UW-Stevens Point Friday night in Berg Gymnasium. The Eagles, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, improve to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pointers, ranked 24th in the NWCA, fall to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
UWL won the first four matches to take a 15-0 lead.
Ryan Weinmann, ranked fourth at 125-pounds, opened with a win by decision (8-4) over UW-Stevens Point's second-ranked Ben Vosters to give UWL a 3-0 lead.
Reid Johnson followed with a win by decision (7-3) over Michael Bannach at 133-pounds to make it 6-0.
The Eagles'
Cody See, ranked second at 141-pounds, received a forfeit for a 12-0 advantage and
Mason Geary won by decision (3-2) over Joe Crook at 149-pounds to make it 15-0.
UW-Stevens Point took the next two duals to cut UWL's lead to 15-6 as Boone Roycraft won by decision (6-3) over
Austin Schoen at 157-pounds and Logan Hermsen won by decision (8-4) over
Derek Weinmann at 165.
UWL's
Tyler Schneider, ranked fifth at 174-pounds, won by decision (9-4) over Anthony Friese and
Alex Friedman won by decision (7-3) over Cody Nielsen at 184-pounds to give UWL a 21-6 lead. The Pointers' Bo Seibel won by fall (2:35) over
Zach Tooley at 197-pounds to cut the deficit to 21-12, but the Eagles'
Clay Broze won by decision (5-3) over Donnie Ralston at 285-pounds to make the final score 24-12.
UWL returns to action Saturday, February 6 at the UW-Eau Claire Don Parker Open at 9 a.m.
