Geary Interview
Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked fourth on this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Poll, earned a 33-9 victory at Luther College (Iowa) Thursday night in the Regents Center. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season. UWL now leads the all-time series, 32-16-1, with Luther (Iowa).
UWL took the first five matches Thursday, including two by fall and two by technical fall.
Nelson Baker, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestler of the Week, opened the dual with a win by fall (5:36) over Luther's (Iowa) Connor Murphy at 125-pounds to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
Ryan Weinmann, ranked third in the country at 133-pounds, followed with a win by fall (5:45) over Tyler Menegay for a 12-0 UWL advantage.
Dustin Weinmann and
Mason Geary recorded back-to-back wins by technical fall. Weinmann, ranked second at 141-pounds, won by technical fall (16-0, 4:00) over Gilbert Valadez followed by Geary winning by technical fall (16-1) over Andrew Schmidt at 149-pounds.
The Eagles'
Michael Murnane won by decision (9-2) at 157-pounds over Travis Ostby to give UWL a 25-0 lead.
The Norse earned its first win of the night at 165-pounds as Tristan Zurfluh won by decision (2-1) over
Logan Schlough.
UWL's
Richard Carlson, ranked fifth at 174-pounds, gave the Eagles a 29-3 lead with a win by major decision (12-4) over Luther's (Iowa) Billy Poray. The Norse' Justin Kreiter, ranked first in the country at 184-pounds, earned a win by decision (7-4) over the Eagles' seventh-ranked
Alex Friedman.
UWL's
Michael Otomo followed with a win by major decision (11-3) over Luther's (Iowa) Matt Chlebek at 197-pounds. The Norse' Clayton Jennings won by decision (7-1) over the Eagles'
Konrad Ernst at 285-pounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, December 10 at the St. Cloud State University (Minn.) Open at 9 a.m.
