Women's Basketball Drops WIAC Opener at UW-Platteville

Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 66-60 at UW-Platteville Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams.  The Eagles drop to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC while the Pioneers improve to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Five players scored for the Eagles in the first quarter, with both teams leading by as many as four points.  Cameron Chapin came off the bench and scored the final six points of the period, and the teams were tied at 16-16 after one. 
 
In the second quarter, UWL led 24-19 with 4:28 remaining after a Jenna Anderson layup capped a 6-1 run.  The Eagles again led by five at 27-22 with 1:49 remaining before a 6-0 run by the Pioneers gave them the lead at 28-27 with :25 left.  The teams traded free throws and were tied at the half 30-30. 
 
UW-Platteville used a 9-0 run in the third to lead 44-36 on a Lexis Macomber layup with 2:07 left, but UWL answered with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, capped by a Chapin jumper to close the gap to 44-42 at the end of the period.
 
The Pioneers scored the first three points in the fourth quarter before a Maggi Bishop three-point play cut the lead to 47-45 with 6:44 left.  The Eagles would get no closer the rest of the way, as UW-Platteville grew the margin to as many as eight points with under a minute to play, and held on for the win.
 
UWL shot 33.3% from the field, including 9.1% (one-of-11) from three-point range, and 56.3% (nine-of-16) at the free throw line. 

Chapin scored a season-high 14 points for the Eagles.  Anderson added 10 points and two assists.  Bishop led the team with five rebounds and added eight points and two assists. 

UW-Platteville shot 38.9% from the field, including 60.0% (three-of-five) from three-point range, and 63.6% (21-of-33) at the line.

Morgan Horstman led UW-Platteville with 17 points with Kassie Buchholz adding 11 and Elisa Bilderback 10.  Allison Prestegaard added 11 rebounds for the Pioneers. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, January 9 at UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
